Review
“Ben Connelly clearly and beautifully links the life of this renunciate mountain monk to our own complex, multitasking, engaged and over-involved lives, showing how we can find great depth of wisdom and compassion right here. He brings this poem to our lives, just as they are." (Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness)“Written from the inside out, this wonderful book explores Zen Master Shitou's marvelous and revelatory poem ‘Song of the Grass Roof Hemitage.’ The language and sense of immediacy makes Shitou's work transparent to all.” (Joan Halifax, founding abbot, Upaya Zen Center)“A great addition to the latest stage in the development of Buddhist books by Westerners for Western audiences: the careful commentary to a traditional text. This stage follows the Dharma talk book and the general intro book, necessities for introducing the general reader to Buddhist teaching. That having been done, we are now ready for something with more depth, and the audience is well prepared for it, and seeks it. Connelly has what it takes to accomplish this task: a deep and detailed knowledge of Buddhist philosophy and the ability to write about it in an informal, engaging, and understandable way. This book is easy and pleasant to read, with plenty of wit, and with many examples from daily life. There's humor, deft turning of phrase, even some paradox and poetry.” (Norman Fischer, author of Training in Compassion)"This lovely book is an invitation to experience calm and ease while looking deeply into who lives in the grass hut. It is a wonderful guidebook on the path to being a wiser and kinder human being delighting in a simple, natural way of life." (Ellen Birx, author of Selfless Love)"Inside the Grass Hut is a clear, charitable presentation of Zen tradition and practice. Connelly provides fresh, insightful interpretations of Shitou’s classic poem, directly applicable to zendo and daily life. But striking, too, is the personal and serene tone of the writing, of the instructive exposition, which infuses the book with a living pulse and -- what I will dare to call here -- the very essence of Zen." (Mike O’Connor, translator of Where the World Does Not Follow)"Ben Connelly sensitively re-imagines for the modern reader Shitou's timeless poem about what it means to be fully alive in the world. Written not just for Zen practitioners, this lovely book offers insights and encouragement to all who seek to live in the simplicity of the present moment." (Janet Abels, author of Making Zen Your Own)

I've been reading widely in the Buddhist literature for over 50 years. And I've been a meditator in a number of different traditions within Buddhism for as long a time. Every once in a while I come across a book that is so clear, so heartfelt, so honest that I am spellbound reading it. I was not familar with Shitou or Ben Connelly and bought this book when I saw it on Amazon when I was looking to buy another book. I haven't gotten to the other book yet as this one has my complete attention--heart and mind.Phillip Z. Author of A Skeptic's Guide to the 12 Steps--a non-theological mediation on the 12 Steps by a recovered compulsive overeater.
I rarely rate books because of the many variables to a person liking anything at a particular time. This book is an exception. Ben Connelly has done a masterful job of bringing the reader something useful no matter where you are on the path. The reader without any background in Buddhist teachings who is wondering what it is all about will find the teachings to be remarkable clear and easy for a western mind to understand. The poem itself is a deceiving little thing with many layers of meanings, most of which have been touched on in an easy to read book. If you shave your head and have been practicing for many decades you may still find things here of interest. This a book that can be read more than one time and new treasures may be found. If after reading this book you disagree with my opinion please write and tell us why as I have read it many times and still am unable to find a reason to not like it.
Inside the Grass Hut: Living S***ou's Classic Zen Poem should appear on every Zen library bookshelf.S***ou, author of "Sandokai" ("Identity of Relative and Absolute") was a Zen monk who lived in 8th-century China. Sandokai, written in the third person, is part of the liturgy of many Zen temples. "Song of the Grass Hut" is a first-person recounting of direct experience, and perhaps less suited to formal rituals.I find "Song of the Grass Hut" and "Sandokai" have virtually the same content, but presented at different levels of granularity, if you will.I heard Ben Connelly, author of this translation, speak at ZCLA. He signed my copy afterwards. His insights into this work are well worth reading.RECOMMENDED.
Shitou's Poem Line 27: Let go of hundreds of years and relax completelyBen: "If there's one theme of this poem, it's that we should feel encouraged to relax, to be at ease. .....I think it's important to remember that relaxing is an act of kindness." [and Ben continues to add depth and challenges our thinking about what life would be like if we all just relaxed]Connelly has shared his thoughts on Shitou's classic Zen poem in an inviting manner full of wisdom that will sustain across time. I just love this book.
You don't have to be into poetry or Zen Buddhism to appreciate this book. There is something in here for everyone looking to stop and take stock of their lives. I even laughed out loud a few times at how well this author sums up what it's like to be human: our foibles and frustrations. Ben Connelly offers authentic words to guide you to a peaceful place, away from the constant worry-state that we all know so well from our daily lives. He shares his own personal struggles with attaining joy and breathes new life into an ancient poem: thoughtfully, gently, and uniquely. I highly recommend this little book - I will read it over and over and find something new every time. Thank you Ben!
I can hardly put this down. I have a few classes that are working through this, and I am way ahead of them. I will read through it, and then read again. I find myself, totally engaged and the lightbulb going off, right and left
The simplicity of this title hides a depth that holds a vast expanse of knowledge. Each line of Shitou's poem is explained as if the author had been there discussing it with him. There is a peerless insight in this work that sees through the centuries and into the heart of a simple mountain monk. I would recommend Inside the Grass Hut to anyone who is interested in Buddhism, from beginners to experts and everyone in-between. The book speaks in a contemporary language that makes Shitou's teachings available and relevant to people in the 21st century. I loved it and plan on reading it again.
Ben Connelly's commentary on "Song of the Grass-Roofed Hut," by Shitou, provides a nice balance between monastic contemplative and lay life, with practical applications on how to merge the two, which a lot of American Buddhists attempt to do, more or less successfully.
