From Booklist

*Starred Review* The changing seasons have been the subject of many a picture book, but this one has a particularly unique take on the topic. Each season is explored in terms of how it encompasses colors. In the spring, “Red sings / from treetops . . . / each note dropping / like a cherry / into my ear.” Green “peeks from buds,” and yellow “slips goldfinches their spring jackets.” Succeeding seasons offer other opportunities for the colors to spread their particular magic. In summer, “white clinks in drinks.” The blue in water takes on many names: “turquoise, azure, cerulean.” Sidman also brings other senses to the fore. Old leaves and crushed berries smell purple. And though one might not associate pink with winter, it “prickles: / warm fingers / against cold cheeks.” All of these evocative images are matched in the imaginative illustrations. Stylized figures, intricately costumed and crowned, walk, run, and sail through Zagarenski’s artwork. You’ll find one in a tree picking juicy red apples and another set against an expanse of white, building a snowman. Throughout, the mixed-media illustrations, including collage and paintings on wood, provide much to look at. And as the title implies, the colors that surprise on every page do sing. I just opened my amazon package 10 minutes ago. Immedidately I was drawn to the one picture book I got on a lark: Red Sings from Treetops. What gorgeous illustrations! WOW! There's almost a magical feel to them, due to a wonderful combination of seemingly simplified, childlike drawings that are actually incredibly complex in their details and in their treatment of background, textures, and color. Realistic representations mix with fanciful ones; backgrounds and large expanses of color, like grass, are treated with whimsical patterns, and shapes are often formed out of collage. It is one of the most beautiful children's books I've ever seen, and I'm a collector. The story is pleasant and fulfilling, as the author guides the reader through the year via color raher than the usual month approach. The writing itself is innovative as well, utilizing as other reviewers have mentioned poetry that will please little ones with the occasional rhymes, but is never labored. This is the rare children's book that is a treat for adults as well as children, between the instructive and unique approach to the story and the illustrations that are whimsical enough to excite children but that have beauty and complexity to please adults.I looked through the whole book, but it's just too big of a treat to rush through. I'm looking forward to savoring every page with great pleasure.

My kids and I got this book out of the library every few months, so we decided we need our own copy of it. Personally, I love the text, wonderful little poems that are incredibly unique but easy to relate to. The pictures are also worth taking a while to look over, my kids discover something new in them every time we read it.

Our family loves books. We've been unable to return this one to the library without buying a copy for ourselves. When my 2.5 yr old daughter recites,"...andeach note dropslike a cherryintomyear,"her tremendous joy is reason enough to recommend this book to anyone who loves words, loves colors and appreciates the seasons. The lush illustrations are worthy of a book that speaks in color--a delight!

Wonderful book. Love the story and the art work. Favorite art work.

What a lovely book. Request was for a color description book. This one is beautiful and the descriptions are tactile as well as colorful. Would say it's for an older child, unless like this little girl, it's someone who can't wait to hear you read. Highly recommend.

love this book, and especially the illustrations. my son's not seen art work like this before and he couldn't keep his eyes off the pictures - darting all over the pages.lovely story, poetic, beautiful, magical, creative, stunning all round.

After borrowing this from the library I knew I needed a copy of my own. A beautiful collection of short poems for each season that children will enjoy listening to. The illustrations are beautiful as well.

I LOVE this book. My infant and toddler both love it, too. Its very rhythmic and beautiful. Every page is a joy to see and read. As its about a topic that is broad (colors and seasons), I plan on buying this book for all the new babies that I know that are being born. Its a beautiful gift and applicable at any age.

This novel is a gem, because it expires human nature even further than the previous no pass through the development of characters that have been on the edge of the stories. The thoughts and preoccupations of Father Tim, Cynthia, Dooley, Lace and the hearts of two men who have served prison time highlight the story line. If one has read all the previous novels, a settled and comfortable feeling enters the reader while moving through the story. Mitford is a known quantity— a comfortable friend with surprising twists and turns!

There is a spirit that enlivens each page in the Mitford series. It flows from the characters and the plot like a river and transports you to a time of peace and goodness and transforms you with the same. The author has the gift of making you feel like you are living in that time and that place. If you are looking for a book that will hold your attention, remind of what life can be about (the decision being up to you) and all very readable you will enjoy this book and the whole Mitford series.

I hate to say that I'm disappointed in this audiobook, as it is well done and I love the story. I am, however, very disappointed that there was no way of me knowing that I was ordering the Abridged version instead of the full Unabridged version that I really wanted. I don't like Abridged versions because so much of the story is missing that it becomes disjointed. When trying to buy a used copy of the book, for some reason the sellers leave off this very important fact of being Abridged or Unabridged and so it's a complete risk to purchase it. Since it's used you can't necessarily tell by the price which it is, either. I've had the same problem in the past as well and it is very frustrating to spend money on something that disappoints, not because it is a bad book but because it is an incomplete book purchased blindly through Amazon. Can it become a regulation that audiobooks must divulge whether they are abridged or unabridged. It would help immensely.

These are the first books I have read by Jan Karon and I'm hooked. This series about an Episcopalean priest and his dog is so completelyentertaining that I plan on getting many more of her books after I completed the 9 in this series. She is a writer that makes you feel as thoughyou are a part of this small but wonderful community. There aren't too many books that will make you laugh out loud with the smallest sweetestthings. I know I will miss Fr. Timothy Kavanaugh and his life with his new wife and old dog. Make sure you real al of them in order. You too willbe in love with this series. Thank you, Jan Karon.

It has been quite a few years since I read the first books of the series and, of course, at that time the final books hadn't been written. I haven't read the last 3 books so I am looking forward to enjoying them. This series is well written and when you finish each book, you feel good. The characters are believable and you care about them and what happens in their lives. In our world today where so much anger, hatred, and discord seems to abound, it is a wonderful respite to visit this place of good people who care about and help each other. I do suggest reading the entire series in the order they were written.

As a pastor I enjoy reading the Mitford series. I can relate to lots of the things that Father Tim deals with. This book spoke directly to my heart. Retirement is not something that Pastors look forward to, at least not the ones I know. A good pastor / missionary / evangelist never retires from doing the Lord's work. But what caught me here was the fact that even Pastor's can struggle with some discouragment and depression. I have struggled for the last two years with some depression after being moved from one position to another. It has been difficult. Sometimes I wondered where God was.I like Father Timothy kept opening my Bible looking for the right verse that would speak to my heart. So, as I read this book I totally related.I would hope that as you read it you will come to understand that Pastors are just as human as everyone else. We deal with the same issues that laypeople deal with.God is there and is walking with us through every part of our lives. You just might not see him clearly right now. But hold on tight, He is there and He loves you and will help you find the other side of depression and bring you Joy in the morning.Thank you Jan for writing a truly heart felt book.

I cannot properly explain why I love these books. There is so much ‘food for thought’ and you just have to love the simple life in this small town. And I love that Father Timothy experiences doubts and faces problems as we all do.Jan Karon’s Midford Cookbook & Kitchen Reader - if you haven’t seen this it is a jewel!

Jan Karon has a real winning set of characters in the Father Tim Series, and I would love to have more of them. It is so very refreshing to follow people who are living their lives to their best, and while there are issues to address they gather and find ways to address their concerns. Father Tim is not pretentious nor does he think he has all the answers, and in fact is just as human as his parishioners. The characters have a sense of humor can make the reader smile, and generally love the whole town! Father Tim and Cynthia are very special people, and I have loved following them through their "adventures" and challenges.

Time for a Heart-to-Heart: Reflections on Life in the Face of Death, by Bob Mitchell

Review

“There are lots of memoirs out there about heart disease, but Time for a Heart-to-Heart is unique . . . thought-provoking and challenging, with lots of insight and wisdom, inviting any reader with a beating heart to contemplate nothing less than the meaning of life. Plus, it’s a fun read filled with entertaining anecdotes from Bob’s colorful past. As we used to say in Brooklyn, ‘What’s not to like?’ This is a must-read.” —Larry King, founder of the Larry King Cardiac Foundation (from the foreword) “Bob Mitchell has great insights into medicine, and much more brilliant insights into life. His memoir is wonderfully funny, uplifting, and a true celebration of what we all should be thankful for, the passionate fight for survival. Do-overs are indeed an engineering feature of our bodies. As a weekly radio/podcast show host, I get to read fifty-two books a year—some 830 since I started. Bob Mitchell’s Time for a Heart-to-Heart is clearly at the top, among many great ones.” —Mike Roizen, PhD, chief wellness officer at the Cleveland Clinic and New York Times bestselling author “I’m always impressed by the bravery of patients, especially when risks are high—how do they find their courage, patience, and optimism? Bob Mitchell brings that conjuring to life from a rare perspective, grounded in several thousand years of literature, philosophy . . . and sports! Mitchell’s sweeping chronicle of life and heart transplantation is Odyssean, Dantean, Talmudic, and reminiscent of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. It is a Truth Well Told.” —Craig R. Smith, PhD, chairman of the Department of Surgery, College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University; surgeon-in-chief at Columbia University Medical Center of New York Presbyterian Hospital “Few individuals have traveled on the remarkable journey detailed in this memoir; fewer still have the capacity to make it come alive in the context of art, literature, and Everyman’s experience. Bob Mitchell draws upon an unparalleled depth of knowledge and erudition to craft a must-read work for patients, providers, and all those whose lives are personally touched by the intersection of heart disease and high technology.” —Dr. Stuart F. Seides, physician executive director of MedStar Heart & Vascular Institute, Washington, D.C. “I believe that Bob’s story will provide hope to other patients with severe medical diseases, promote faith in modern medicine, and, above all, underscore the importance of support from family and friends to healing and recovery. This book is about real life and a great and hard-fought outcome, as told by a true novelist.” —Jon A. Kobashigawa, PhD, director of the Heart Transplant Program, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, LA (from the afterword)

Bob Mitchell has written a moving, sophisticated and inspirational memoir of his several year journey with heart disease, which led to his having had a heart transplant two years ago at age seventy. it is a story of: remarkable personal resilience, the brilliant medical care he received, the extraordinary love and support that he and his wife Susan provided one another during their ordeal, as well as a profound reflection on life itself. Mitchell moves effortlessly between his experiences waiting in the hospital for a new heart and early memories stimulated by his uncertainty about whether he will live or die as he waits for a new heart. I found the recollection of his mother's reading The Little Engine that Could to Bob when he was about two years old as he was about to have both heart and kidney transplants to be the most moving of Bob's early memories. Bob is also a patient describing his experiences of months in the hospital, the constant tests, not knowing whether he will live or die, moved by the humanity of his physicians and care takers, dependent upon their skill, judgment and caring in order to survive. As a physician, I was deeply moved by Mitchell's beautifully written story, and I found his experiences as a chronically ill patient struggling with life and death issues on a daily basis to be very instructive. This is a book that deserves to be widely and carefully read. It's a brilliant piece of work by a gifted writer whose honesty will touch any reader deeply. Reviewer: Stanley Possick, M.D.

Bob Mitchell's HEART TO HEART presents an intense look at what has to be one of the scariest events in anyone's life: having one's heart removed and replaced. He survived, indeed prevailed, thanks to two loves, namely athletic competition and literature. I loved all the literary references and all the sports citations. I'm glad I never had to face Bob on a tennis court; he would have decimated me. Oh, yes, and thanks to one other love -- Susan, his wife, miraculously named Susan Love. I'm grateful for these loves, and for the book as well.

Whether you know Bob or not (I do!), you'll enjoy reading this book. It not only helps you to understand a complicated health issue, but also provides a fun sweep through the popular culture of the '50's through our current days. Bob's memory is unfailing and his zest for literature and life comes through!

What do you want from your money? College tuition for your kids? A bigger house and a new car? Security when you retire? Wouldn't it be great simply to have enough money so you don't have to worry? The "enough money" part of that equation is easy. By the time you finish this book you will understand everything you need to know about managing and protecting your money and making it grow. The "so you don't have to worry" part is much more complex. It actually has nothing to do with how much money you have or how little. You can balance your checkbook until you're blue in the face, you can move money every day between your mutual funds, you can double your life insurance, you can buy lottery tickets--and none of it will do you any good until you get beyond the worry and fear. The fear of money, the fear of not having enough, the fear of having enough, the fear of taking action, the fear of inaction. There isn't a part of our lives that money doesn't touch--it affects our relationships, the way we go about our everyday activities, our ability to make dreams reality, everything. Most of us, I think, have a core of anxiety that we carry around with us, though we may not admit it to ourselves. That is part of money's power over us.From years as a financial planner I have learned that true financial freedom doesn't depend on how much money you have. Financial freedom is when you have power over your fears and anxieties instead of the other way around. That's why, in this book, we'll address first the fears, then the finances.Whatever their circumstances--in debt, working, downsized, afraid of becoming downsized, retired, having just inherited money, having just lost money--my clients invariably arrive with a handful of financial papers and a heart full of anxieties. Like most certified financial planners, I started my practice to help other people with their money, but as time went on, I realized that it was far more than their money (or lack of it) that needed attention. Today new clients arrive expecting me to ask to see their papers. Instead I ask them first to share their fears. It's never too soon to begin, and it's never too late, no matter how the bottom-line numbers read today on your particular handful of financial papers. This book presents a nine-step process that will take you back into the past, when your attitudes about money were born and began to grow. It will help you face the present honestly and clear the way for you to create a future you will love.I know it works. As you read this book you will meet others who have taken the steps toward financial freedom--and finally made possible the lives they dreamed about. You will also see that if I could do it against all odds, so can you. When I was very young I had already learned that the reason my parents seemed so unhappy wasn't that they didn't love each other; it was that they never had quite enough money even to pay the bills. In our house money meant tension, worry, and sorrow. When I was about thirteen my dad owned his own business, a tiny chicken shack where he sold take-out chicken, ribs, hamburgers, hot dogs, and fries. One day the oil that the chicken was fried in caught fire. In a few minutes the whole place exploded in flames. My dad bolted from the store before the flames could engulf him. This was when my mom and I happened to arrive on the scene, and we all stood outside watching the fire burn away my dad's business. All of a sudden my dad realized that he had left his money in the metal cash register inside the building, and I watched in disbelief as he ran back into the inferno, in the split second before anyone could stop him. He tried and tried to open the metal register, but the intense heat had already sealed the drawer shut. Knowing that every penny he had was locked in front of him, about to go up into flames, he literally picked up the scalding metal box and carried it outside. When he threw the register on the ground, the skin on his arms and chest came with it.He had escaped the fire safely once, untouched. Then he voluntarily risked his life and was severely injured. The money was that important. That was when I learned that money is obviously more important than life itself. From that point on, earning money, lots of money, not only became what drove me professionally, but also became my emotional priority. Money became, for me, not the means to a life rich in all kinds of ways; money became my singular goal.Years later this kid from the South Side of Chicago was a broker with a huge investment firm. I was rich, richer than I could have imagined. And I realized I was profoundly unhappy; the money hadn't bought or brought me happiness. So if money wasn't the key to happiness, what was? It was then that I began a quest, which has taken me deep into the meaning of life--and the meaning of money.I don't know if I have discovered the meaning of life, but I have learned a great deal about what money can and cannot do. And it can do a lot. Your money will work for you, and you will always have enough--more than enough--when you give it energy, time, and understanding. I have come to think that money is very much like a person, and it will respond when you treat it as you would a cherished friend--never fearing it, pushing it away, pretending it doesn't exist, or turning away from its needs, never clutching it so hard that it hurts. Sometimes it's fatter, sometimes it's skinnier, sometimes it doesn't feel so good and needs special nurturing. But if you tend it like the living entity it is, then it will flourish, grow, take care of you for as long as you need it, and look after the loved ones you leave behind. Most of us already know at least some of the steps we could take to free ourselves from money anxieties--we could manage our debt better, arrange for our children's education, strategically plan now for later, protect what we've saved, save more. Yet most of us are paralyzed, too, when it comes to actually taking these steps, however wise they seem, however much we think we really want to take control. What good will it do you to know what you should do, if you can't do it?The Nine Steps to Financial Freedom: A PreviewThe first steps of this book take you back to discover why you don't do the things you know you should do and bring you beyond that--to where you can take action. These steps will free you to open up a dialogue about money with your parents, your children, and, most important, yourself. The next three steps are the laws of managing money. These laws are must-do's. They cover everything from wills and trusts and what insurance you need (and don't need) to new ways to think about debt and your 401(k) or retirement plan to how to invest and what to invest in. They teach you why you must trust yourself more than you trust anyone else with your money. The goal of these particular steps is to make you as independent from financial advisers as possible. Over the years, I have learned that it is in my clients' best interest for them to take control over their money, not to relinquish it, even to me. If, later on, they choose to entrust their money to someone else, with these steps they would no longer be able to be taken advantage of by an unscrupulous adviser--or by their unwillingness to face up to the facts and figures of their own finances. Once you take these steps, you will discover the exhilaration that comes from wanting to deal with your money, not just having to deal with it.The last three steps take you beyond the realm of finances, to the wealth that money can't buy. When it comes to money, freedom starts to happen when what you do, think, and say are one. You'll never be free if you say that you have more than enough, then act as if and think you don't. You'll never be free if you think you don't have enough, then act as if and say you do. You will have enough when you believe you will and take the actions to express that belief. And you'll have more than enough when you realize that you can be rich at any income because you are more than your money, you are more than your job or title, than the car you drive or the clothing you wear. Your own power and worth are not judged by what money can sell and what money can buy; true freedom cannot be bought or sold at any price. True freedom, true wealth, is that which can never be lost.

The 9 steps to financial freedom by Suze OrmanLove the author's advice, have seen her on TV her own show and PBS. She's straight forward knowledge and caring.Although a bit outdated as laws and rules have changed the basic advice is the same. Good to review yearly.I received this book from National Library Service for my BARD (Braille Audio Reading Device).

Great book, but it is a bit outdated. She bases her advice on interest rates of 8%, and you'd be lucky to find any place to invest with interest rates over 2%. For this reason, I think the book is too outdated to be of significant relevance. I give 4 stars because it provides an overview of the framework for investing, and it is very motivational. Hoping for a newer book from Orman, but nothing as of yet.

I wish this book was available to me when I was 20 years old, I certainlywould have done some things different in my financial life. When we are youngwe are given all sorts of advise, on right and wrong, relationships, jobs, education etc.But No One tells you what to expect in later years and what to be aware of and what toplan for. Suze has done that and so much more in her book, "The 9 steps to Financial Freedom"Our relationship with money clearly determines the kind of life a person will lead. Apart frombeing told to save for a rainy day, no one ever explains why. Having grown up with the bare necessities and barely enough of that, I squandered my first pay checks on clothes, shoes, going to have my hair done in a salon and any other frivolous things a young women can squander on. at 18 years old I was working 3 jobs in 3 different places as a waitress and neversaved a cent. I was living on my own in NY renting a room and on my day off I would go to the salon and have my hair and nails done and dress to the nines for my evening out. I didn't sleep much in those days, after all I was young and beautiful and I was going to meet my prince charming somewhere. Then I got hit with walking pneumonia from working so hard, not enough sleep, poor eating habits etc. After being in the hospital for 2 weeks I came back to my rented room only to find out, it was no longer my room and they were holding my clothes hostage until I paid the back rent that I missed while I was in the hospital. Of course I didn't have it, because I always spent every cent I made and didn't even have a bank account. Luckily I wore uniforms at work because I didn't have any other clothes to wear, I slept in the back room of one of the places I worked for a while and saved enough money to pay what I owed on the rented room and get my clothes back. By then I was only working 2 jobs putting in a lot of extra hours and became a squirrel with my money, saving what ever I could from my meager pay and tips.I learned a life lesson at that time but still had no guidance, I did the best I could and as time went by I met my prince charming, opened a bank account got married and had a couple of children and explained why the relationship with money shapes your life, the good, the bad, and the ugly. So when I read Suze's book it was like my life's story only much more sound and in depth advise. I have read all her books, watched her dvd's and passed on the information she so eloquently put together. Through her advice I have a will, a health directive, living will and am in the midst of setting up my revocable trust. So yes I most defiantly would suggest that everyone read her books and tailor her advice to their own needs.

This book is a common sense approach to getting serious about managing finances to enable one to lead a more satisfying life. It is comforting to know that you have done what you can to avoid financial pitfalls. By the way, I had bought this book many years ago, and had found it to be very helpful. One thing in particular I had not done was to take out a long term care policy. Orman explained that one serious illness or disability could wreck you financially. I purchased this book for my fourty-something daughter, who has begun to do serious financial planning.

My friends who are financial planners tell me that they never meet anyone who does not know the right answer about what they should be doing with their money, but yet no one of these people acts on what they know. The author, financial planner Ms. Suze Orman, seems to be reflecting this perspective as she asks a series of probing questions about what your mental associations to money are. These questions are designed to help you free yourself from harmful associations that may be sabotaging your current thinking. For example, some people associate having money with loss of love (such as through seeing their parents divorce after one parent became much more financially successful). If you find yourself not acting on what you know that you need to do, you should buy, read, and change your thinking based on the questions in this book. This will be a five star book for you.If you already think you know lots about money and always do more or less the right thing, you need a different book (one that focuses on advanced techniques that you do not already know). This book will be a one star book for you, and I suggest that you avoid it.If you have to choose between The 9 Steps to Financial Freedom and The Courage to Be Rich (Ms. Orman's newest book), I would strongly advise you to read this one because it is a much better and more helpful book. You can read my comments on The Courage to Be Rich if you are interested. In any case, if you have ideas about money that make you uncomfortable, this is a good book to start with. Then you can graduate to books that will teach you more about WHAT TO DO NEXT. I think that you will find Rich Dad, Poor Dad to be very helpful.Have fun and be more comfortable! This can be a 2,000 percent solution for you (getting 20 times the results you get now -- since almost all investors do much more poorly than the S&P 500 over any 10 year period of time). In fact, did you know that an estimated 80 percent of day traders lose money? Did you know that 95 percent of commodities traders lose money? There must be some pretty powerful false beliefs that cause people to undergo so much turmoil to befcome poorer. If you want to learn about the stock market, start with John Bogle's Common Sense on Mutual Funds.

Great read for every young person and anyone who wants to brush up on goverment.

Very good book for teaching the government to young children.

I learned so much for this book.Did you know that our constitution is the shortest of all that were written? And did you know that there is no set number of justices for the supreme court written in the constitution so it has changed over time? And did you know the US existed before the constitution was written? All things I did not know.It was written for young kids but I hate reading the ‘grown’ books on legislation because they always throw in big words, as if knowing the three branches of government weren’t confusing enough! So I get most of my books for the kids section on government and other things cause its easier for me. Simple yet concise writing on our government’s branches as well as some history as to how the branches came about being decided upon.Thoroughly enjoyed it.

Review

“Her revealing doctor-patient stories often make her seem like the doctor that every patient wishes they had, and she draws on patient accounts to illustrate the problems that can arise in communication between doctor and patient. This book, however, goes far beyond Ofri’s personal experiences with patients. She delves into the relevant research on communication, citing some ingenious experiments on listening...A much-needed, convincing argument that, regarding doctor-patient communication, the stakes are very high and that what patients say is all too often not what doctors hear—and vice versa.”—Library Journal“With disarming candor and penetrating insight, Dr. Ofri illuminates the enormous power of what might seem at first a mundane and insignificant element in the practice of medicine: communication.”—Deborah Tannen, professor of linguistics at Georgetown University and author of You Just Don’t Understand and You’re Wearing THAT?“With the meticulous care of Oliver Sacks and the deep humanism of Atul Gawande, Danielle Ofri has written a book about the role of communication in medicine. She presents compelling evidence that even as doctoring appears to be dominated by technology, the human, affective relationship is at the very center of responsible practice.”—Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the TreePraise for Danielle Ofri“Taut, vivid prose...She writes for a lay audience with a practiced hand.”—Katie Hafner, New York Times“A gifted storyteller.”—Sarah Halzack, Washington Post“The world of patient and doctor exists in a special sacred space. Danielle Ofri brings us into that place where science and the soul meet. Her vivid and moving prose enriches the mind and turns the heart.”—Jerome Groopman, author of How Doctors Think“I highly recommend [Danielle Ofri’s work] for physicians, would-be doctors, and anyone interested in medicine in all its behind-the-scenes glory.”—Sandeep Jauhar, author of Intern: A Doctor’s Initiation“Danielle Ofri’s sensitivity to every aspect of her patients’ lives is immensely impressive and moving. If only more doctors could be (and write) like this!”—Oliver Sacks, author of Awakenings“[Ofri’s writing] about the emotional life of doctors and their patients, captivated me so much...Read[s] like a deftly crafted and luminously written novel.”—Caroline Leavitt, Boston Globe

Writing in the Guardian in the spring of 2016, Andrew Solomon singled out Ofri as the only woman among an extraordinary new generation of doctor writers, saying, “Ofri has produced four impressive books and numerous articles, all striking for their reversion to empathy, their willingness to sense not only the physical life of a patient, but also the emotional.” She lives in New York City.

I found it refreshing that a doctor would be so concerned with communication with patients that she would go to this much trouble to research the literature, interview patients and doctors and suggest that this simple tool is as valuable to successful medical outcomes as any other medical procedure. Dr. Ofri invites us to witness the lives of several remarkable people who are defined not by their illness but rather by their character and she highlights how a clarity in understanding of the patient's needs is far more important then knowing just the person's malady. She juxtaposes the barriers doctors face in communicating with patients with the desire of patients to be given the best possible treatment . On the patient's behalf, she quotes the author Anatole Broyard who wrote "To the typical physician, my illness is a routine incident in his rounds, while for me it's the crisis of my life." She goes on to say that rather than seeing the conversation between doctor and patient as the utilitarian humdrum of a visit, the conversation should be viewed as the single most important tool of medical care. The book is written in an engaging style with perhaps a few too many forced metaphors. I enjoyed reading it and wish it became widely read by those in the medical field.

When I recently came across Dr Danielle Ofri's book "What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear," I was particularly interested because as an internal medicine physician who is also a chronic pain specialist, I am very aware of the importance of communication between doctor and patient, and the value of getting to know the patient and his/her life and activities as part of the evaluation of the patient's needs and determination of appropriate treatment. In fact, I also teach a nation-wide remedial opioid prescribing course primarily to physicians and nurse practitioners who've been disciplined by the state professional licensing boards related to their prescribing of controlled substances. In my course I repeatedly emphasize the importance of connecting with the patient and engaging with them, all too frequently a missing piece. I was thrilled to read what Dr Ofri had to say; her book gives several detailed examples of the value of engaging with the patient, how easily misunderstandings take place, and the problems that ensue when inadequate communication is present. . This is particularly important when it comes to "difficult" patients, patients who especially need a doctor who is willing to ask questions, listen to the answers, and to problem-solve with the patient. I think this is a very valuable book, much needed, and one that can really help health professionals to do a better job.

Dr. Ofri has written another great book about the importance of doctor and patient communication (I also loved her book, What Doctors Feel). Apart from being a great writer, Dr. Ofri has the ability to articulate the "inner voice" that all doctors possess. As a doctor reading this book, you will find that your own inner voice will come to life. It is also a great book for patients to read. The book demonstrates the powers of empathy and humility on patient care. It sets a standard for what patients should expect in their relationship with their doctors. Readers will come to see that healthcare consists of much more than medications or procedures. All this is done through interesting and well written stories that make the read effortless.Through these stories and anecdotes, a philosophy of patient care will emerge for the reader and alter the way he or she looks at medicine in the future. The reader will also be touched by the book's poignancy.

Another fascinating book by Danielle Ofri. She argues persuasively that the conversation between doctor and patient is the key to successful diagnosis and treatment. In addition to vignettes of her interactions with patients, she includes a fascinating discussion of "listening" that begins with advice from her cello teacher. There are other moments when she raises ethical issues of deception that provoke more thought in her readers.

I am a retired internist and medical school professor who devoted much of my career to teaching communication skills to medical students. I found Dr. Ofri's book refreshing, informative, and emotionally compelling. The threads that she skillfully weaves together are the data collected by scientists , the heartfelt stories told by patients, and her own experience as a listener and caregiver. The author gives a master class in listenng that is a must read for health care professionals and their students, and for anyone with an interest in interpersonal communication .

No matter at which end of the stethoscope you find yourself, Danielle Ofri's "What Patients Say, What Doctors Hear" will be of value to you. This highly accessible book offers many useful suggestions to aid patients in pursuit of receiving the best care from their doctor and doctors seeking to provide the best care that they can to their patients despite the overwhelming burdens of their work.

This is a great book. I bought a few copies: one for me, one for a doctor who listens and treats her patients they way they should be treated (as a thank you) and one which I slipped to a doctor who hasn't heard a word I've said for 9 years. I trust that all three of us understand that listening, truly hearing what each other are saying in a medical setting, provides the best health outcomes.

As someone who has both worked with medical students and been a patient advocate I believe Dr. Ofri has nailed it! She tells stories and provides evidence to back up the idea that communication is key to a patient/health care provider relationship. I highly recommend this book for the layman, such as myself, who wants to better understand how to navigate the world of clinics and hospitals. She generously gives examples of tools, for all of us; doctors, nurses, specialists, and patients, to help ensure the best possible outcomes.
