First let me say that I read several technical books a month, and have reviewed them for Manning Publications on several occasions. So I have some pretty high standards that must be met before I give a book five stars.I am teaching myself PowerPivot for work, and have Microsoft® PowerPivot for Excel® 2010: Give Your Data Meaning which is very thorough, but this book is more helpful. It focuses most on what I know least about--Data Analysis eXpressions, or DAX. It begins with the assumption that the reader is an Excel power user, or "Excel Pro" as the author calls us. It therefore gets right into the material related to PowerPivot, without wasting time or space on things everyone who uses Excel professionally already knows. The author's writing style is entertaining, turning what could be a very dry topic into something you want to celebrate along with the writer. I love his side remarks, such as: "You will not see me create another implicit measure in this book. They are dead to me."My only complaint is a formatting one. Much of the text is in a green font that shows as a much lighter gray on the regular Kindle, making it hard to read. Even on the Fire I would have preferred a choice with more contrast.Despite that little annoyance, the book is a fast, enjoyable read with the information presented effectively and in an order that makes perfect sense to an Excel Pro. I am tempted to go ahead and buy a print copy just to have as a reference for my team, it is that good.

Clearly, Microsoft Office is at a juncture and this book provides a concise and readable explanation of the future of Excel. This book addresses problems of managing extremely large datasets without the necessity of using SQL Server/SQL Server Analysis Services. Through thorough explanation and demonstration by examples, Rob Collie provides a structured decision-matrix for enterprise developers considering how to achieve performance improvements, deployment efficiency, and "non-coded" Excel (without VBA) solutions without the intervention of professional database programmers. I recommend this book for persons with limited VBA and SQL programming experience, as the PowerPivot engine exposes similar functionality achieved by programming through the use of DAX formulas - more easily comprehended by traditional users of Excel. On its own merits, this book is so readable that I recommend it to anyone interested in Microsoft's vision of its future Office product. For example, the capability exposed through PowerPivot requires hefty system requirements, necessary to know prior to purchasing new workstations, or on the contrary, making a decision to use Office in the cloud or on a SharePoint Server. This subject and many others are covered by straight-talk explanation.

Mr. Collie has put together what I hope is the first in a series of definitive books on PowerPivot, and self-service BI.Written in an easy to understand prose, Rob takes PowerPivot users to the next level with Microsoft's new product.Packed with tips, tricks, and 'traps' (to avoid) --- A Simple Guide... takes packs a tremendous amount of knowledge into a VERY QUICK read. A must reference and guide for analyst, project manager, finance manager, and engineer.Order an electronic (Kindle) copy AND a printed book. You'll want to have Rob's insights handy the next time someone tells you "you can't do that in Excel", whatever that task is.Rob, Marc Russo, Bill Jellen (and a few other) are the next faces on the Mt. Rushmore of Excel self-service BI.

This is a MUST READ for the everyday Excel business analyst. Excel has been rescaled to omit the services of a SQL programmer or DBA to directly employ the entire records requirements of your spreadsheets and analyses. The concept of true scalable BI is no longer beyond the query capabilities of the everyday Excel business analyst. Rob Collie is in the business of transforming everyday analysts into Excel power users and once again he has proven his dedication and abilities in this mission. Excel has been reborn as a true BI tool...!!!

I'm a self-taught expert at Excel. I've been using the software for almost 25 years now. I also been creating and using Pivot Tables for the past 10 years, but despite my long experience with the subject, I certainly had some gaps due to my learning style.Rob Collie's book not only fill in the gaps, it provides a solid foundation upon which you can confidently upgrade from Expert to Master.I have never come across a technical book that delves deeply into a somewhat complex subject with such an easy to follow and funny style. You will hardly feel the need to read the same chapter again. Once you read it, you are ready to move on to next with a very clear understanding. This book deserves 6 stars out of 5, and I highly recommend it for Excel/PowerPivot users

I was a little ambivalent on choosing between 4 or 5 stars. I'm a SQL Server DBA and database developer and have found a few things that are easier for me to do in SQL than I find to do them in PowerPivot using DAX as described in this book. Then I realized that that's totally in keeping with the book's audience and purpose. This is a book that any Excel power user can get into. You'll be well served to talk to your DBA (if you have one of those), but if you're the only data analyst in your organization then go for it. If you've got good SQL chops you may find some of the author's enthusiasm for PowerPIvovt a bit inexplicable, but go along with him, you'll see why.I'm largely self-taught in PowerPivot and DAX. As with most languages/tools/environments I saw a need, found a tool and started using it. That let me begin to do some interesting stuff with PowerPivot and DAX, but also left large holes in my knowledge and understanding. This book fixed that quite nicely. So, I recommend this book, and the author's blog ([...]) unreservedly.I
