Review
"June's book goes far beyond how to find the lost dollars. It includes primers on all the basics of running a good business, from marketing to client relations, and from cash management to computer systems. This is a must-read for any current or aspiring A&E firm leader." - Frank A. Stasiowski, FAIA, Founder and President, PSMJ Resources, Inc."June Jewell has been at this a long time and her book reflects that intimate practical knowledge of our industry." - Mark Zweig, Founder and CEO, Zweig Group"There is little to no business training in the architectural or engineering curricula, leaving most of us as we enter the profession woefully lacking in the business, sense, vocabulary, or skills necessary to guide our firms to financial success. Our clients, who depend on us to be stable, ongoing enterprises for the period of years during which we'll be working together expect us to be more than just surviving. June's book offers complete and detailed guidance that every architect and engineer needs to be successful."- Ed Friedrichs, Friedrichs Group, and former CEO, Gensler"Find the Lost Dollars not only has relevant, current data and advice, but the last chapter gives you a gift: tools to assess your firm and how to find the lost dollars in your practice.....go find those dollars and be more profitable"- Ted Maziejka, Consultant, Zweig Group

From the Author
A bit about me...I was accidently "thrown" into the architecture and engineering (A&E) industry in 1989 when I worked for a CPA firm in charge of growing their management information systems (MIS) practice. My job was to help our clients determine their requirements and find the best accounting system for their business. Up to that point, I had worked with generic software systems that were focused on accounting features, functionality, and reporting. I worked with Gorove/Slade in Washington, DC and helped them select the Wind2 software system. Over the next 23 years, I worked with hundreds of A&E firms, and learned a lot about best practices to make money on projects.I wrote this book because I feel passionate about helping firms succeed by improving the way they manage employees, projects, processes, and technology. I have seen so many examples of poor business management over the years and the sometimes devastating effects that bad business decisions have caused for our clients. Â I wrote Find the Lost Dollars to help A&E firm's leaders and future leaders improve their business management practices, grow revenues and become more profitable. My mission now is to help every one of our clients find at least $100,000 in additional revenue or cost savings. I am calling this the $100K challenge. The only thing I ask is that you are open minded, and willing to take a detailed look at how your firm really operates on a daily basis. My guarantee to you is I can find $100,000 in your business - if you are willing to make the changes necessary to take your firm to the next level.

I first found out about this book in our industry newsletter for the Society of Design Administration. The article got my attention and I wanted to read the book. I immediately went to June's website and signed up for her blog and a free chapter of the book. When I read the Introduction it was like she was writing about the company I work for. I begged our management group to read it. After getting a few people to read the free chapter it was decided that the book would be required reading for all management before our annual planning retreat. It was the best planning retreat we have ever had. It opened our eyes to some changes we could implement to increase our profitability. It increased their awareness of all aspects of our firm. I have the book on my Kindle and I have a hardcover copy that stays on my desk. I refer to it all the time. Our industry has needed a book like this for a very long time.
Good read and I will keep it handy for reference. Nothing earth shattering here but it is well written, easy to read and follow and has good tips and sound reasoning behind them. I enjoyed it.
Having worked in an architecture firm for 15 years and serving A/E/C companies as a management consultant has given me some perspective on the subject matter. June has aptly identified the problems that most A&E firms face when it comes to financial thinking and laid out an actionable path to increased profits.I warmly recommend this book to all principals at A&E firms, but also to project managers who are critical to the economic and professional success of their firm.I was so excited with this book that I interviewed June for my blog. You can listen to the interview at aec-business.com.
I've been in the A/E professional for 27 years and this book is completely relevant on the issues and topics. I'd recomment it to anyone in the A/E industry regardless of comapnay size.
Basic guide to discover where your firm is losing money. Story told from a macro coaching perspective, no technical details on effective cost control, overhead allocation or operational strategy.
As you read through this book, you are constantly thinking that this suggestion or that recommendation is so obvious, and makes so much sense, why haven't we implemented that before. This should be a textbook for Schools of Architecture!
Find the Lost Dollars is a "must read" for everyone in an A/E firm from those in leadership roles down to recently hired staff members. It is a very clearly written guideline for not just "finding the lost dollars" but also efficiently running an A/E firm.
