Gee, the peer pressure is almost too much here! So many 4s and 5s. I might prefer 3.5 stars because this is a solid and certainly comprehensive effort. But a great book? Perhaps not. The history of the drone idea and its subsequent development and deployment is fully done and credit to the author. Yet the book seems to waver about a bit in its focus. Some story lines seem to exist for no particular purpose, although it does add some needed human interest (particularly the story of the Blue brothers, which was one of the more engaging but sort of pointless story lines). At times it can be quite dry in describing the bureaucratic infighting and details. While necessary to understanding anything of modern military weapons development it can get pretty gruesome in the telling. The sheer number of officers, agencies, weapons labs and layers of military-industrial complex can be daunting and ultimately sort of boring. The book is also a combat history of the early drone and falls a little short there with a lack of maps and often context for the missions themselves. But there are some gems uncovered in these accounts as well. For instance where the analysts in Bosnia were converting drone video to still photos since that is what they were used to! Still it is very interesting to see the evolution of the drone and be left to wonder where it will all lead. As we watch the Battle for Mosul these days and the ubiquitous drone usage by ISIS it is clear that this story has much yet to be told, but Pandora's Box seems an apt analogy if there ever was one.
This a valuable and insightful narrative account of: the people, bureaucratic tensions, technologies and actions relative to the iterative designs and subsequent deployments of the Predator/Surveillance and Predator/Hell-fire aerial drone weapons platforms. The book is masterful in describing the roles of innovators, bureaucrats, and war-fighters. The insights into the effects of technological innovations, decisions and policy in-decisions at the CIA, Department of Defense, Department of the Air Force and the Clinton/Bush White-house is valuable to readers interested in national strategy and US military issues. The insights and understandings of political positioning and Washington power struggles are at once disconcerting and intrinsically valuable for students of defense politics. The writing style is excellent and his use of personal recollection and official records is masterful. This is a valuable and useful book for both specialists and general readers.I highly recommend the Predator – The Secret Origins of the Drone Revolution.Thank you for reading my review.
Mr. Whittle's book brings to focus the foot dragging establishment known as "military procurement", fighting tooth and nail against ANY unmanned, aerial vehicles to the hasty deployment of the same after 9/11. The history of the aircraft itself is told in an engaging fashion full of great anecdotes and well researched history of UAV's. At least one of the key characters is given only a nickname, "Werner", keeping his real name unknown. All in all, probably the only book one will need to understand the drones themselves and their all too often maligned operators, men and women who are every bit as heroic as their "flyboy" comrades. A must read, especially, if one wants the back story of the "missed opportunities" to neutralize Osama Bin Laden and Al Qaeda in the years prior to 9/11.
Having read a number of books more about 'drone' policy, or books that explain the use of drones in the context of the drone in warfare, it was fascinating to read a book about the drones as weapons and technology.I saw the author on a recent C-span panel with others whose books I have read discussing the development of the drone and ended up buying this book. It is an excellent read. The book goes to the beginnings of the development of the drone as a crude system to the more modern developments as a weapon carrying system (the book does not delve into detail of the World War II development of drones (yes, the existed) but more of the path of the weapon we know today.Well worth reading.
Still in the process of reading the last pages of this book, but I have enjoyed it throughout. It is a detailed account of the trials and tribulations of creating drones, from the first inventor, an immigrant who arrived in the time of the second world war, to today's marvels of engineering. Every instance of drone development ran into some kind of obstacle, it seems, and those stories and how they were overcome are excellent examples of hierarchically systemic thinking among people who are comfortable in their existing paradigms. Whittle tells the stories in a matter-of-fact way that is as descriptive as necessary. Any comments I might have as to the efficacy or morality of the drone issue I'm leaving to the reader: make that decision for yourself. The reader can get as tied up, angry, amused, or dismayed as desired, or just read through unemotionally. Although the story is fascinating, it IS a book that I can put down occasionally.
I do not need to repeat what excellent reviews have already said about drones, the US military, the storytelling and the accuracy of this book. It is a timely book on an enormously important development—for the military and in the future for civilian society. I thought several times the author got deeper into the detail of bureaucratic in-fighting than was necessary and the story bogged down, in my opinion. The author did not get into as much detail on the operation of drones and the physical details of their development. Those topics were often covered in more summary manner. I appreciated the notes at the end of the book and the bibliography. My Kindle version is one of the few Kindle books I’ve had which does not link notes at the end to their corresponding location in the text, which is a negative and a failure to use the capabilities of electronic books.
