Review

I have just read On the Laser's Edge and I want you to know how much I enjoyed it. An interesting story, fascinating characters and themes that are so relevant in today s world made it compelling ... Wisconsin has some great stories and great storytellers. --Jim Doyle, former governor of WisconsinThe activities of the Posse and associated right-wing neo-Nazi fringe organizations are skillfully chronicled ... With their ringleaders put out of commission by dedicated law enforcement and the undercover information provided by a citizen volunteer, Mike Muckerheide, a talented scientist and laser expert, the Posse gradually faded into the woodwork. But that did not bring an end to controversy and turmoil. --David R. Obey (former U.S. Congressman from Wisconsin) in his book: 'Raising Hell for Justice'It sounds like science fiction even today. Back then [the 1970s] it sounded like something you d read about in the comics while sitting in an asylum. --Mike Nichols in 'What they never knew about Mike', Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

You will truly enjoy this book. Based on a true story that can finally be told. Hear first hand from the FBI agent who investigated this crime and watch how the politics of it all played out. Wisconsin State Representative tries to affect world order by hiring engineers to build a lazer that will destroy other countries only to have his plan cut short through the efforts of this FBI agent. Great book for students who are not avid readers as there is something for everyone in this book.

interesting.

This is a great book. Picture yourself as a FBI Agent in the mid seventies and you are approached by an individual who tells you he has been approached by a group of right wing nut cases who want him to build them a "Buck Rogers" type of death ray so they can attack our country. And the funny thing about this is it is all true and the scientist is capable of building such a weapon. The story is a fascinating account of how the FBI put together a criminal case involving at one point a corrupt Wisconsin State Legislator. I admit I am partial to the story as I am a retired FBI agent myself. But I found the old cliche, I could not put the thing down until I was finished, so true. It's a great story and I am just surprised it has not gotten more public attention. The scientist has now passed but from everything I read in the story he is a real American hero. Great book.Jerry WebbSpecial Agent FBI-Retired

This book was an excellent read showing a real FBI case and how a true American came to the rescue of the U.S. before the Soviets successfully got a jump on our laser technology. The book is well written, flows well, and showed outstanding research in getting all of the facts straight. It isn't Hollywood, but is actually factual. Refreshing.

This is a great read. It is a story worth telling and it is told well. I was surprised that this happened right here in Wisconsin and besides the mystery and thrill aspect of it, I learned new information and interesting facts.

This book reads like a good spy novel. Having lived in central Wisconsin at the time this story took place I remember the crazy far right militants that were prevalent in the area at the time. There's a lot of people who wrap themselves in red white and bue and proclaim themselves patriots, then there are the quiet ones like Mike Muckerheide who have the courage to quietly do the right thing at great risk to himself and his family. This is an unbelievable story, set in small town America. Remember to remind yourself as you read it that it is not fiction but a true story. Can't wait for the movie!

#169,584 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This is really more of a very, VERY basic follow-along tutorial than any kind of actual reference book. I bought it hoping to be able to search for how to do specific tasks (e.g. how to curve text along a path). I would have rated myself as a rank beginner with GIMP, but this quick tutorial covered really nothing I hadn't already figured out for myself. Searching it was cumbersome (although that might be a Kindle thing rather than an issue with this eBook specifically), and there's neither index nor table of contents. Now off to spend $25 or $30 on, hopefully, a real reference book. Oh well.

This is one of the best how to books I have ever read. I really liked that it has written from user point of view, which makes it easy to understand. The returning "How to do/reach/use this" section are the best. They burns the basic keyboard combos into your brain so you never gonna spend time to find something in the menu.Who needs to work on documentation, websites and have to do all the basic work (resize, crop, make background transparent, etc.) This book is the perfect choice. Gimp is cross platform so even you can change work, computer, operating system and you still can use what you've learned.

Simple , just the facts, a nice piece of work. If you need to use Gimp like I did this morning (building Fed Tax Forms), and not a photoshop type of guy, grab this book, its certainly worth 5 bucks and Gimp is open source, so you are way ahead of the game. Its simple and I have built my image, exact size and quality I needed.

Learn Gimp is interesting and entertaining. With no background in Photoshop or Gimp, I was able to work through and understand the exercises in the book. My interest in Gimp is to use the program to edit photographs. David Balakirev imparts the basics of Gimp clearly and concisely. The software is complex and powerful, but I am confident that with the basic knowledge I acquired from David, my photo editing skills will improve rapidly.

Gimp is a complex tool, and can be frightening for a beginner. If I had a book like this in 2003 when I first met Gimp then I would have spend seconds not long minutes searching for the functions and menu items I need. However nowadays Gimp is a sharp knife in my toolbox when it comes to graphics, this book is still interesting to me and learned couple of new things at the end.I recommend this book to everyone - the expertise level doesn't matter. The book is well edited, the author has a clean and simple style. I especially enjoyed the images selected for the illustrations.

I think this is a very good user manual for beginners as I am a beginner. I've been around photography and graphic arts much of my life but I've never practiced graphic arts. The book seems to be well laid-out and comprehensive enough for a hobbyist.

Very limited.not worth buying

I bought the kindle version. It was poorly written and a complete waste of my time. Seemed to be the beginning of a book that was not completed. ,including chapters that were not finished. The next to the last chapter was unfinished for example, I'd give the chapter number, but the chapters were not numbered, except in the authors mind. Don't waste your money. I will now look for a better hard copy book.

Our 6 year has been taking piano for several years now. We bought this book to inspire her and it's wonderful. It is about Art Tatum and it is descriptive and engaging to our daughter. The illustrations are lovely!

The story of Art Tatum has been told too rarely -- it's a delight to have this wonderful book written by an impassioned author. Even more amazing is the gorgeous artwork, also done by Mr. Parker. Strongly recommended.

Informative as well as enjoyable. I will certainly share this book with my piano students. His story is an inspiration to us all whether one is a musician or not.

My eleven year old grandaughter liked this because she takes piano. Liked the fact that it was a true story.

Would have liked more of a story about his life rather than cartoons. Hard to read as print was very small.

Art Tatum was a little boy born in Toledo. His father was a mechanic and his mother, who loved to sing in church, did a lot of cleaning. His mother played the piano, but mostly it sat "quietly in the corner," until one day he became tall enough to hit the keys on the keyboard. He banged at it, played with one finger, two fingers and before you could wink an eye it started to sound very good. Even his mother said it did. He loved to play on the piano and didn't care much about night or day and because his eyes were so bad he really couldn't tell the difference."Don't wear out that piano today," his father said to him before he left for work. Art just loved his piano. By the time he was ten he was asked to play in church. A little case of jitters immediately went away when he touched the keyboard. Later he was asked to play at the YMCA, then at a bake sale and even someone's birthday party. "My, my, isn't he something," his mother gushed. More and more he was asked to play until he became famous, but he still remembered and loved "all the people who helped" him. This was a wonderful story. It was written in a gentle, sing song tone and was quite inspiring. The watercolors meshed quite well with the text. In the back of the book Robert Andrew Parker writes about actually meeting and listening to Art play. There is a brief, but very interesting biography of art and a bibliography. This book would be very appealing to any jazz fan and will be appreciated and loved even by those unacquainted with his work.

Gorgeously rendered watercolor illustrations and first-person-perspective text contribute to the dreamy feeling of a young boy with poor eyesight growing up to become one of the world's jazz greats. Combine this with vintage recordings and old YouTube videos of the man himself for maximum impact.

A book that tells of the childhood of the great jazz piano player, Art Tatum (1909-1956), who, though stricken with blindness when very young, went on to become a keyboard wonder. Beautifully illustrated and sensitively written, it fills you with joy and an urge to listen, or re-listen, to a miraculous musician.

Lisa Randall no doubt is a genius, because this reads as if she knocked it off over the weekend and mailed it in. I am sure explaining high level physics to a general audience is tough, but this reads as if she herself couldn't figure out what level she wanted to hit and her compromise doesn't make it - alternating between great redundancy in stating (and restating, and...) some ideas, and impenetrability, or superficiality in treating others. A poor balance. The impression is that this was designed to catch the wave of excitement about the Higg's, with the priority being given to getting it out quickly, at the cost of a better, more thoughtfully written book. Would have benefited from stronger editorial oversight maybe, but for me this was tantalizing but ultimately unsatisfying.

The book is actually only 40 pages long and is only an advertisement for the author's other two books. After page 40 the author kindly includes two chapters from the other books as a commercial preview. The actual content of the book is written poorly and only scratches the surface of an immensely complicated subject that should be exciting but comes across as dull. Borrow this from a public library if you must read it, but don't pay even a penny for it.

I think the book itself is very good - at least from what I could tell. Perhaps if I had the full book I would give it four or five stars. However, when I bought the book at the "special price" I hadn't realized that the "Kindle single" edition is merely an expanded free sample - it is not the entire text. At first I thought I had accidentally downloaded the sample, but after finally talking to a CSR at Amazon we (for she hadn't realized it either) found out that indeed this version only contains excerpts from two chapters.Evidently, the publisher, trying to push hard-copy editions, severely limits the e-book version. I assume Amazon itself was not really aware of this; otherwise one hopes they would have made this very clear in the description rather than just touting the super-low price. In the ends, if feels like a rip-off - only $3 worth, but it left a bad enough taste in my mouth that it will be a long while before I get suckered by the Amazon special Kindle book deal thing again.Meanwhile, I plan to make use of my local library to actually read the full book itself, which, as mentioned already, looks to be excellent.

She is a magnificent technician. She knows her ways in the corridors of the Standard model superbly. She is also very straight forward providing explanations about how things are working in the official Standard model.I am still reading the book--currently at chapter 16--and one thing is becoming more and more clear to me:The standard model, as does quantum physics--as I come to know them deeper--are acquiring an intense flavour of a patch. Of a set of rules and particles mastered to give explanation to experimental results. The quest for the Higgs Boson is no exception. It is an ingenuous postulation of a mechanism that gave explanation to all experimental results about 40 years ago. But as we dig deeper and get more experimental results with magnificent equipment, we are starting to see little subtle flaws in the theory that cannot be explained within the theory, no matter weather we are at the Higgs level or the Standard model level. These flaws will grow in importance and put the model in big trouble in not too long. It has happened may times before. How convenient that the Higgs field can spontaneously break the symmetry so that larger than 250GeV particles do not interact with it, but all those smaller do. Or to have an infinite supply of weak charge coming from who knows where. This last one responded a question I had in mind before reading this book: ¿How can the Higgs field maintain its density, so that mass does not vary with time, in an expanding universe? As George Santayana said: "those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". And this is starting to have a strong flavour like the pre-Copernican equants (Claudius Ptolemy refined the deferent/epicycle concept and introduced the equant as a mechanism to account for speed variations in the planets' motion in a geocentric model). It so happened that the model was incorrect; not the observations. He also quoted: "In fact, the whole machinery of our intelligence, our general ideas and laws, fixed and external objects, principles, persons, and gods, are so many symbolic, algebraic expressions. They stand for experience; experience which we are incapable of retaining and surveying in its multitudinous immediacy. We should flounder hopelessly, like the animals, did we not keep ourselves afloat and direct our course by these intellectual devices. Theory helps us to bear our ignorance of fact." The last sentence of the quote may have an explanation for why we do have to have an explanation for everything. But there may simply not be one from our perspective...I am far from being an expert on these matters, but perhaps for not being an expert I have the luxury of a broader look at things. She is very good at what she does, but in my opinion she focuses a lot into details. And this is not her fault, but the fault of modern science. After Newton, Leipnitz and a few other great minds, we have convinced ourselves that specializing is the way to go. And in this turn of method we have lost the broader picture of things. Most of it is just sophisticated background noise.I think that modern Scientists run from any model that requires explanations out of the reaches of our physical universe. And in doing so they are confusing the "How" with the "Why". It frightens them that the Why for what we can perceive may come from other dimensions (if we believe in one of the strong theories they worship: "string theory"). Dimensions that may very well be out of our reach. Dark Matter and Dark Energy elusiveness is pointing this way.I really like this book for how it has helped me to think out of the box. Which, I am sure, was not her intention. But like I said, I am a nobody and most likely these rebellious ideas of mine are not correct.

I bought this booklet in both paperback and Kindle formats because one reviewer had said they were different. This is not so; the texts are the same word-for-word. Only the footnotes from the excerpts from her two previous books are missing in the Kindle version, and you should read those two works anyway. The reason this booklet was written was that the previous book was written just before the discovery of the Higgs particle. As it corresponded exactly to the author's prior predictions, there was scarcely any need for this book. This is the final chapter missing from the prior book.It is amusing/ironic to have Prof. Randall go after the use of the term "God particle" when her previous book was titled "Knocking on Heaven's Door", but I agree that this is a bad name and hope that it falls out of use soon.We are lucky to be living in a time when real experts write popular treatments of the latest advances: read "Warped Passages", even though it is from 2005, and especially read "Knocking on Heaven's Door"; they are excellent!

This was extremely helpful... and gave me hope that I would recover from the most painful breakup Ive ever experienced (at age 44). I would recommend this to anyone who is in the midst of anything similar.

I am in the midst of having my heart being crushed right now and this book is exactly what I need to help me. I'm going to re-read it again and a third time if I need to.

An easy read considering the topic. Author uses stories that many will identify with. He provides some coping mechanisms to get through the really rough parts. It helps to know someone understands how we react the way we do in a society that is not necessarily supportive of showing emotion.

I got this book after watching his Ted Talk that I really enjoyed. It's short, easy to read, and has a lot of practical advice. I found myself taking away a lot of what was mentioned and implementing it in my own life. I am definitely going to keep this on hand to share with my friends and to revisit if I ever get my heart broken again... lol

Reading about other people's journey through heartbreak and healing has been helpful. I hope to put some of these ideas into practice for myself. Everyone should read this book at some point. Whether to heal themselves or help a friend.

Very disappointing if you watched the TED video, there is no need to buy book, no new info in in the book, after finishing last chapter, I said That's it??

This is a fanatic book. Small book with so much helpful information. If you have every lost anyone or anything or felt the hurt of loss this is the book to read.

Excellent book with great tips on how to heal after a divorce, break up, or any loss. The author makes me feel normal for having all of the thoughts and feelings I’ve been going through. Plus, there are a lot off very practical do’s and don’t’s to help the healing process go faster and to not make things worse. I highly suggest this book!

Pompeii: Lost and Found, by Mary Pope Osborne Bonnie Christensen

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 3-5–After brief accounts of the events of 79 A.D. and the first archaeological investigations of the city that lay beneath the fields surrounding Mt. Vesuvius, Osborne's straightforward text focuses on the life at Pompeii at the time of the volcano's eruption. Discussions of daily activities include mention of the many types of buildings unearthed, such as private homes, bakeries, baths, and markets, as well as the activities enjoyed by the free citizens of Pompeii–concerts, plays, and gladiator fights. A large illustration, flanked on the right by two boxes containing text and a smaller picture, occupies most of each spread. Christensen's distinctive, haunting frescoes are reminiscent of the art found throughout the site. Some illustrations are copies of original artwork, while others offer glimpses into what the city may have looked like prior to the volcano's eruption, detail objects found on location, and offer readers information on dress, decoration, and architecture. The illustrations are framed with decorative patterns typical of the period and the colors used reflect those found at Pompeii, including the distinctive, earthen red of some of its most familiar frescoes. While Osborne's text does not go into great detail, it will serve as an enticing introduction to this legendary city frozen in time. Students ready for more information will be fascinated by James M. Deem's Bodies from the Ash (Houghton, 2005), illustrated with outstanding color photos.–Daryl Grabarek, School Library Journal Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Gr. 2-4, younger for reading aloud. Christensen's striking, original frescoes illustrate this lively introduction to Pompeii. Osborne begins by imagining what the Roman city's residents were doing just before Mount Vesuvius' ash buried the city. Later spreads chronicle archaeological discoveries and discuss how scientists form a picture of daily life from the objects, buildings, and artworks recovered from the magnificently preserved site. The theatrical account of the ancient citizens' response to the disaster will bring children right into the history, as will the clear, succinct descriptions of how the people of Pompeii ate, bathed, shopped, and amused themselves. Christensen's unusual frescoes, with their cracked, rough-hewn surfaces and blurred figures in Roman costume, extend the sense of antiquity while making the details of ancient life (and the terror of the event) tangible. In a lovely closing, two images reinforce connections to history by juxtaposing the same street scene, shown first with a Roman Empire mother and child, then with a contemporary mother and son. A note about frescoes and a quiz close. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I bought this book for my 9-year-old son. They had been talking about Pompeii in science class, and he wanted to read more about it. He really enjoyed the book! It was easy for him to read, and it left him wanting to read more.

good for book report

my child loved it

Just perfect!

Pompeii Lost and Found is a nonfiction picture book for children in grade 4 and up. It begins with an explanation of the devastation of Pompeii by the volcanic explosion of Mount Vesuvius. The book leads us through the archaeological discoveries of an entombed city. It explains the artifacts and what they mean with regard to the life of the historic city. There is just enough information at each page to pull the reader through the book. It is written in a style sure to intrigue all readers and is filled with juicy tidbits such as, “They’ve also found graffiti written about gladiators, such as ‘Celadus, glory of the girls, heartthrob of the girls.’”Bonnie Christensen’s amazing illustrations given air of authenticity to the book. She adapts the style of her art to the subject matter once again by creating genuinely frescoes to tell the story of Pompeii. In Italy, the artist learned how to paint pure pigment mixed with water on wet plaster, like the ancient Romans, creating a fresco. She explains the process in a note at the end of the book. As we turn the pages, it feels as though we have walked into an ancient city. The texture of the frescoes is authentic and fascinating.Children, and adults, of all ages will learn from and enjoy this exceptional book. Highly recommended.Find more children's book reviews at [...]

This is a nicely-illustrated (fresco painting style pictures) picture book depicting the history of the town of Pompeii and its destruction via volcanic eruption. The book is large size with pictures each page, medium amount of text, thus appealing and not overwhelming to early elementary students. I used it with a 2nd grader, who was easily able to read it independently. The content was realistic without being overly explicit to those kids who may be sensitive to content regarding death of people and animals. It does not gloss over the fact that many died, but does it considerately, I thought. The whole book is framed by describing the archeological discovery of the town, which helps the children understand it occurred far in the past, and it was real (not just a fictional storybook).

Since we have been fortunate to having visited Pompeii the book helps keep the memories alive.

was surprised to find that it is a childern's book, but it will be of some use in another way
