This is a great book. I have it for my kindle and wanted a hard copy so I purchased one. This format is terrible for knitting from. It is a small book, about the same size as a short story anthology usually is and it's thin, so they put all that information into small print. Also, the back is glued, so when I spread the pages apart so the book would lay flat the pages came loose. I took it to have spiral bound and that made it much better to read from, but it still isn't a book to have on a side table and read the knitting instructions from while you knit. I have to put the knitting down, pick up the book to read, put the book back down, then try to remember what I read to knit it. I'll stick to my kindle one and just save this as an example of why I should pay attention to ALL details before I pay for something.

TOK and KW give a lot more details about their lives.KA lays out a great 1-year curriculum for creating 12 knitted projects. This book contains some black and white photo and pattern-stitch graphics, but much less so than those in TOK and KW.At the end of KA, is a 6-page Appendix, with black and white stitch – needle graphics. There is also a 2-page Index following this section.As with the patterns/ lessons learned in KW, EZ set up her patterns and curricula and also arranged them in KA, from simple to complex.The 12 patterns/ chapters of this book are: 1. A Aran Sweater; 2. Some Babies’ Things; 3. Difficult Sweater (Not Really); 4. Mystery Blanket – Weaving; 5. Mittens for Next Winter; 6. Borders, Small Stuff for Summer Knitting – 3 Hats; 7. A Shawl: Good Travel Knitting, One-Row Buttonhole; 8 Christmas Fiddle-Faddle in the Wilds; 9. Nether Garments; 10. Open-Collared Pullover; 11. Moccasin Socks; and 12. Hurry-Up Last Minute Sweater (my favorite pattern in this book).This book, plus TOK and KW, should be on the bookshelves of all HK and EZ enthusiasts – as an integrated book about HK, but also a highly interesting book by a knitting genius who wants every HKer to ‘play’/ experiment, themselves, to develop their own new stitches and patterns.

This would be a full five star review if I hadn't bought the kindle edition. I feel like I have spent a day with my granny talking about knitting, having had a lot of my own views validated by the queen of knitting - wonderful. But the format does not suit the kindle at all, the pictures are badly placed and it is hard to set bookmarks right so you can go back and find what you are looking for in patterns etc. I went right along and bought it in paperback today and now feel that I have wasted the price of the kindle edition - I could have bought yarn for that!

The patterns are OK - nothing out of the ordinary and some feel and look very dated (probably because the book was written in 1974!). The baby sweater with the gull pattern is one of the best patterns in the book. The directions are good. There are some interesting and helpful "terms and procedures" at the end. A nice addition to your knitting book library, but nothing you can live without.

Whether you are a raw beginner or an expert knitter, you can't go wrong with Elizabeth Zimmermann. In my case, back when I decided to learn to knit, I was having a problem with - what was it? I don't remember. Two stitches that were supposed to be different from each other kept coming out the same. I found EZ's "Knitting Without Tears" in the library, read it, and bingo! Problem solved.With this book, you can knit your way around the year. Like all of her books, you can also use it as a jumping off point; as inspiration to design your own project. ("Unventing," EZ calls it.)

Its great to see this knitting classic updated in a larger hardback version, with larger print, color pictures, and some things re-knit in todays yarns. EZ fans everywhere will want to have this new version! The Almanac features lovely things to knit for each month of the year with accompanying story and instructions from Elizabeth. It feels like sitting around and knitting with your beloved grandmother. Stephanie Pearl-McPhee writes the new introduction and EZ's daughter adds some relevant clarifications here and there. Otherwise, its the same EZ instructions we've come to know and love, the long written out version and the "pithy" version. The charts are still hand-drawn, I'm surprised they didn't update those too.

As a mom, a person of faith, a pastor’s spouse, and an outreach director for a faith-based environmental non-profit, I’d say having hard conversations is an integral part of my personal and professional life.I've worked very hard in the past few years to embrace both/and thinking, especially with challenging topics like health care, abortion, immigration, gun control, human sexuality, and climate justice. It's possible to hold complicated feelings about these issues that challenge our faith and our politics. But I was missing a guidebook on how to do this well and maintain strong relationships.Luckily, Sarah and Beth wrote it, at exactly the right time and in the exactly right way. I immediately realized that I was missing nuance in my life.I received an advanced copy of I Think You're Wrong (But I'm Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversations after hearing about it on the Pantsuit Politics podcast. This book models beautiful how to have these hard conversations. It is a balm to my weary and weathered soul after two hard years of politics in our country and in our church.I have used the principles in this book with members of my church and on social media with great success. Most effective for me was learning about taking off our team jerseys, finding shared values, and assuming the best in the person with whom you disagree.I’m mailing a copy of this book to an elected official with which I strongly disagree. I’m hoping it will make as big a difference in his life as it has mine.

I'm so grateful for this book. Yes, it's a guide for how to have more productive political conversations, but it's more than that. It guides you through examining yourself and your motives. It challenges you to rethink assumptions, embrace curiosity, and "get comfortable with being uncomfortable." It's given me a new way to think about myself and others, and a new way to think about and approach politics and political engagement. I especially appreciate the way Sarah and Beth demonstrate the principles they outline through taking deep dives into social and political issues. They write with honesty, grace, and humor. I'm looking forward to rereading it and putting the principles into practice.

Y’all these are my girls. I was one of those self defined liberals who cried when Trump was elected. I needed someone to hold my hand and tell me it would be ok. CNN was not helping, guys. I found Beth and Sarah through another podcast and immediately became a fan. They shared my concern but weren’t an echo chamber. Instead of focusing on Dems versus Repubs, they talked about how they would approach solving our political woes from their respective sides. There was no bickering or snide remarks. No dehumanizing the other side, no othering whatsoever. The focus was always on “how do we fix this.” They don’t have the answers but they do have a better way of discussing the problem, I’ll tell you that.While listening I discovered that I’m more socially liberal and mostly politically centrist. But that’s not even important. Sure you can say that politics isn’t your thing and I’ll use the nuance I learned from Beth and Sarah to not judge or shame you for it. Do you have idiot bosses or coworkers? Because this book has helped me at work when I seemingly hit a stalemate with coworkers and superiors. This book has literally retrained my brain on how to focus on the problem and unified ways to solve them.I cannot recommend it enough. You should listen to the show too :)

After the election of 2016, I felt that America was moving in a hopeless direction. I felt lost and just needed a voice and a say in what was happening to our country. I stumbled across the Pantsuit Politics Podcast and it has really changed my perspective on politics and our country. What I like about the podcast is that both sides express their ideas in a way that is meaningful and full of respect and grace.I was so excited when Sarah and Beth announced a book that was about guidance that I feel I need when expressing my views and LISTENING to others in a way that is meaningful and open. I love that this book provides insight into listening and considering both sides and that it explores they shades of gray that permeate our world that most people think is black and white.I did receive an Advance Copy of this book, but I also purchased my own copy because I feel that it belongs on my shelf to remind me that 1) I am not alone in my thoughts and 2) Others deserve for me to hear them out and consider their thoughts and feelings as well.

If this book doesn’t give you all sorts of hope for our future, maybe try reading it again. I adore Sarah and Beth and this book is groundbreaking in the way they talk politics. If we could get this into the hands of our nation’s political leaders, I really believe this could change the dynamics of our conversations.Beth & Sarah share their thoughts and viewpoints on a variety of issues in this book, but the best thing they do is give practical tips for us, as readers. Taking the questions and action steps they provide for each chapter allows you to journey along side them in practicing grace and nuance. Highly recommend!

About the Author

A master of eloquence and innovative language, Martín Prechtel is a writer, artist, and teacher who, through his work both written and spoken, hopes to promote the subtlety, irony, and premodern vitality hidden in any living language. A half-blood Native American with a Pueblo Indian upbringing, he left New Mexico to live in the village of Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, eventually becoming a full member of the Tzutujil Mayan community there. For many years he served as a principal in that body of village leaders responsible for instructing the young people in the meanings of their ancient stories through the rituals of adult rites of passage. Once again residing in his native New Mexico, Prechtel teaches at his international school, Bolad’s Kitchen. Through music, ritual, farming, sacred architecture, ancient textiles, tools, and story, Prechtel helps people in many lands to remember their own sense of place in the daily sacred through the search for the Indigenous Soul.

Having merged with the vastness of the natural wild tossing sea we so fear to drown in, they follow each of us like a pod of giant sea turtles, their big sweet scaly heads thumping up under us, trying their best to get our attention and tow us home to our real selves, knocking on the hull of the lifeboat of today’s assumed culture, while we drift along figuring that the anxiety of civilization’s never-ending feeling of emergency is normal."This passage is from page 310 of the book. It sums up Prechtel's almost-desperate thesis; help is available to those who ask. Indigeneousity is a fundamental capacity of humans; what is forgotten is not lost. There's a fierce hopefulness to this book, overtaking the beauty and grief found in Prechtel's previous texts.This is Prechtel's longest and most literal and prescriptive book. Whereas his past book have been written for a general audience, this book is very clearly aimed at his students in his school—Bolad's Kitchen. For these reasons, it also took me longer to read than any of his other books.As the title suggests, the central theme of the book is the interconnected co-existance of plants and people. To take a plant discussed heavily in the book—what we are maize and maize is us? What if these two species are part of a kind of reciprocal maintenance, where each is sustained and evolves with the other? The Maya lived in such a world, and there’s a lot we’ve left behind by stepping out of such a story, to a place where food could be a commodity rather than a peer.A subtext surrounds the importance of authenticity. There is merit to the hipster inclination towards provenance. We like to turn away from stories which displease us. “I can’t afford those handmade pants,” is the sort of statement you might hear, speaking of some artisanal denim from California or New York. But the speaker is unlikely to disavow pants altogether. They will purchase handmade pants—made by the hands of an eleven-year-old in Malaysia getting paid a dollar an hour. There’s a reason you don’t see the label “Handmade in China;” we don’t like to think about those hands, the hands that we are unwilling to pay enough to afford basic human dignity. Prechtel explores this thread by discussing a “House of Origins,” a place where we can tell the complete story of everything inside. How many objects in your life hold this significance? One facet of the sacred is a familiarity so deep that something becomes a part of ourselves.If you sometimes find yourself picking at the chinks in the wall of Western culture, you will find this book a fortifying tonic.

First of all, I would have rated it as 5 STARS if Martin had listened to his editor(s) and shortened some of his sentences to a more reasonable length. Since the end of his sentences relate to how they started, I found myself getting lost and having to go back to the beginning of many sentences to figure out what the end of the sentence was talking about. Martin just puts way too many "and"s in his sentences, making them go on and on and on until a sentence becomes an entire paragraph and the paragraph fills an entire page.Aside from that, Martin Prechtel has something very worthwhile to say. If you're on a spiritual path, you'll just have to remain tolerant and patient until you finally "get it". Hang in there, because you will.Just like many native teachers, Martin talks in circles. In this book, Martin speaks in circles within circles within circles. One story may begin with something and goes off on what appears to be a tangent, only to return to the initial subject in a way where the "tangential" information makes a lot of sense. He does the same thing in linking one story to another with "tangential" stories in between. By the time you get to later chapters, the stories told there relate back to the first chapter and you finally "get it" and you understand why he brought up seemingly unrelated threads within his stories. EVERYTHING IS RELATED.Martin's perspectives on seeds and how they relate to humans and vice versa are very eye opening and explain a lot regarding the indigenous mind and their way of thinking. He even explains some of the ceremonies and traditions described in his previous books and how they came to be. The birth and death rituals are a case in point. There's way too much for me to give detailed examples, and attempting to give any would short change what Martin was saying. Note that I did not say "what Martin was *trying* to say." Martin said it in multiple ways that did not come across as redundant, so if one story or explanation confused you, another one will relieve your confusion."The Unlikely Peace at Cuchumaquic" is going to occupy a special place in my life and on my bookshelf, and I'm going to buy more copies for special spiritual friends who can appreciate what Martin Prechtel has to say.I can hardly wait for spring -- seed planting season !FYI, "Cuchumaquic" is the name of a Mayan village in Guatemala that was destroyed by an earthquake. Even though the survivors were starving, they were unwilling to eat their last remaining pouch of seed corn.

This is an amazing book for people who like to feel the spirit speaking through the words. The author uses his "delicious words" to share the lives and reality of a people and mindset that we could all benefit from living. It's a beautifully written book as are all of his other books. I highly recommend all of Martin Prechtel's books.

I did not like this book and have not been able to finish it. The style of writing is very difficult to read, with long rambling sentences. I found myself reading some of the sentences two or three times to parse the meaning. There are some good thoughts here, but from what I have read so far they could have been said more succinctly and more effectively.

Now and then when you read something, you just know that the information is deep and clear. There is great wisdom here to help us heal as a society. The challenge is in internalizing the wisdom through action and reflection, not just reading the book. It comforts my soul to know that this source is here for those ready to do the work and heal themselves and and their people.

The quality of it was really poor and honestly wouldn't of purchased this product if I was aware of the condition of it being as bad as it was. I'd recommend buying it buying it brand new and not used like I did.

Conan Edogawa's short frame really doesn't allow him to get close up and personal with the criminals he tracks down, so he's asked his mad scientist neighbor, Doctor Agasa, who serves as an equivalent to James Bond's "Q", to come up with some devices to compensate. Now, in addition to his voice modulating bowtie, he has added super sneakers, which give him powerful kicking power, and stretchy suspenders made of incredibly strong material that can be used to tie up suspects. Because Jimmy Kudo now has the body of a six year-old, Agasa convinces him to enroll in elementary school, much to his dismay. In this volume, Conan lends a hand to Richard Moore as a man he was hired to tail ends up dead in a school bonfire celebration. Then Conan and crew help a young high school student find her missing father, a father who quickly is found hanging from the rafters of his apartment! In the final story, things get a little scarier as Conan and some of his elementary schoolmates investigate a haunted house.While some of devices Conan is equipped with this volume seem a little goofy, once you think about it, they're no more kooky than some of the gadgets Bond has fiddled with since Goldfinger. A drawback to Gosho Aoyama's writing is that the cases Conan gets involved with are pretty easy to figure out without much effort. But to Gosho's credit, he does make it interesting with slight plot twists and characterization. It's just nothing above average. The story I enjoyed most here was the one where the kids go into the haunted house. It's just funny to see Conan interact with them. Also, Rachel really surprised me with her strength, impressing me when she went through a car windshield with a flying kick to nab a suspicious man. Aoyama has got some good characters here, it's just that the mystery elements are nothing to write home about.
