The book contains everything a C programmer needs to learn to be able to program NVIDIA GPUs using CUDA: the device architecture, the memory model, the execution model, and optimization techniques. Unfortunately, the book is also often infuriatingly repetitive and wordy. The authors belong to the tell-them-what-you-are-going-to-say-then-say-it-then-tell-them-what-you-said school of writing --- at the paragraph granularity. As a result, the last one or two sentences of a very great number of paragraphs are a mindless repetition of the first sentence of the same paragraph. And explanations are often far longer than they need to be, given that their target reader is a C programmer. For example, their multi-paragraph explanation of "row-major" order can be replaced with the single sentence "Just as in C; look at the picture." In another case, they provide an example of a topic using the "max" function, and then they actually go on to provide another (isomorphic) example using the "min" function! If you want to learn CUDA, you will learn it from this book, but be prepared to do a lot of skimming. Incidentally, the fact that CUDA requires a syntactic extension to C is a horrible botch.

I think this book was written with the beginner in mind - if you're new to CUDA and having issues with understanding NVIDIA's documentation on the subject then this is the book to get. The author(s) took time to clarify and solidify some of the more difficult terms to understand e.g. memory bandwidth utilization, optimizing strategies but there are shortcomings in the book and two i could think of are typos (this really an issue cos it happens to every other book i've read) and the other would be using more examples to solidify concepts and illustrating them.In a nutshell, a great beginner's book but not a handbook sort of book.

This book is a much better introduction to programming GPUs via CUDA than CUDA manual, or some presentation floating on the web. It is a little odd in coverage and language. You can tell it is written by two people with different command of English as well as passion. One co-author seems to be trying very hard to be colorful and looking for idiot-proof analogies but is prone to repetition. The other co-author sounds like a dry marketing droid sometimes. There are some mistakes in the codes in the book, but not too many since they don't dwell too long on code listings. In terms of coverage, I wish they'd cover texture memories, profiling tools, examples beyond simple matrix multiplication, and advice on computational thinking for codes with random access patterns. Chapters 6, 8, 9, and 10 are worth reading several times as they are full of practical tricks to use to trade one performance limiter for another in the quest for higher performance.

The reason why I bought this book is because it has MRI example in Chapter 8. Although this specific example helps me at last, I was frustrated because when I first copy and paste the code, it didn't work. It took some time to figure out what went wrong, and there were errors in the code, not just one. I really hope this has been addressed and fixed in 2012 version.

This book fills a nice gap between the SDK samples, technical specifications, and online course content. If you are just getting started with GPGPU computing, this book leads you smoothly through the computation model, hardware architecture, and the programming model required to take advantage of the hardware.As others have pointed out, this is not a large book and fairly expensive. But, for the first book on the market it's surprisingly useful, effective, and readable. Definitely recommended for newcomers to the platform. Experienced GPGPU developers should only pick it up as a "hand out" for the people you need to train up, though.

This book provides a very good introduction into the topic of massive multiprocessing. I didn't follow the examples because utlimately I haven't been able to use this technique in my projects, but reading the book gave me the feeling I understand the topic and would be able to put it to good use if I decided to actually use it.

I had used the "CUDA by Example: An Introduction to General-Purpose GPU Programming" book as a primer to CUDA work. Using the information from that book, my first CUDA implementation achieved some improvement in performance, but was not what I had expected. It was only after reading the information in this book that my GPU implementation became what I had hoped it would be. The information allowed me to achieve approximately a 60x improvement in the algorithm, dropping a 7 second implementation in CPU space to less than 1/8 of a second in GPU space.

Yes, Nick is an integral role in this story, but not in a way that you want to smack your tablet into your forehead. The guys band together in a way that had me teary eyed. You feel the love. But again, I will stress that it did not feel like the other characters were being force fed to the reader.As for the characters themselves, that's another (dare I say most important) element I was very happy to see the author turn around. In the last book, they felt watered down, silly, and generic. Crash and Burn brings us back to what made us love these characters. They grew their balls back! They don't have to lose their edge simply because they've outgrown their love/hate limbo, and this book proves it. Ty has that scrappy, rakish quality again, and Zane is once more a badass mofo. The only difference is that they've grown in their relationship and ability to trust each other. Zane does things with knives that make me want to high five the nearest stranger. Ty fills the violence shaped void in his big, squishy heart. Chester has a "holy crap that's awesome!" moment. And Nick.. Well, I'm not angry at him for being in the book like I was the last go. Okay, I actually LIKED him in this one. Oh, and the witty banter is back! How I'd missed the sarcasm and uncomfortable jabs here. There's some very real tension and barriers they have to talk out between a few characters (namely Ty and Nick), but it gets you right in the gut. They aren't whining or being pig headed. Instead, they have to figure out how deep trust and brotherhood really run.If you can't handle a slight spoiler- as in something that happens in the first couple chapters- this is where you stop reading.I was so happy to see a couple big cliches avoided. For one, I was thoroughly expecting the impromptu wedding to go predictably array and dragged to the end of their happily ever ending. It didn't! They decided, "hey, we're doing this now come hell or high water," and they did.. Very early in the book. It was perfect for them. Invisible color palate and a stealth theme, but still heartbreakingly romantic. As for the end, I won't go into any detail, but it was satisfying without being toothache sweet. No cringing necessary. Just enough happy ending to make my heart feel a little better about leaving these guys.Overall, this ending was worthy of a great series with wonderful characters. Abi Roux has a special way with giving the reader a chance to really bond with these guys. I empathized with them in a profound way, cried with them, laughed with AND at them. I am so sad to see them go, but it was a beautiful journey that was worthy of a great, explosive (bad pun penalty!) ending. Time to go cry now.

Crash & Burn is the ninth and last installment of the iconic Cut & Run series. With this book, Ms. Roux ends the saga that started as a collaboration with her co-author, Madeleine Urban, and became a solo effort following book 4. We learn, in the author’s notes, that the original division of labor between the two authors was that one wrote Ty, the other wrote Zane. Starting with book five, Ms. Roux took on both and, I must say, the transition was pretty much seamless.For those who don’t already know, Ty and Zane are Federal Agents (FBI), both of whom are gay, though initially, deep in the closet. In the first book, Cut & Run, Zane is just coming off a profoundly disturbing and unsettling long-term undercover operation, posing as the lover of the head of the most notorious drug cartel operating in South Florida. Lots of people want him dead. Ty is the hand-picked right arm of Director Richard Burns, a close friend of Ty’s father - their friendship was forged in the crucible of Vietnam. Burns is virtually a father to Ty. I suppose the partnership between Ty and Zane was supposed to be the pairing of opposites. That turns out not to quite be the case, as we discover in Crash & Burn. Burns was not a good guy.That’s the beauty of this final book in the series: it turns out that not much was as it seemed throughout the first eight books, and all is finally revealed. The talented Ms. Roux handles this wrap-up with energy, aplomb and polish. I worried about how she would handle it, aware of the risk that this final book could devolve into a less-than-satisfying compilation of flashbacks, but she avoids that trap most adroitly. All the action in this book is action moving forwards, and the past is explained and illuminated only by what is happening now. Behind-the-scenes manipulations, unforgivable motivations and a callous disregard for human life (even of those you’re supposed to love) all rear their ugly heads as Crash & Burn races to its exciting climax.For many of us, Cut & Run was our introduction to a whole new world of possibilities in gay fiction. Defying all romance traditions, this whole series is an amazing epic consisting of national and international crime thrillers and deadly high-speed action. Good thrillers, I might add, with impressive villains, rogue agencies, drug cartels and players who, until this very last book, don’t reveal whether they’re heroes or villains. The fact that the men are gay? That’s a side issue. These books were not gay action thrillers, these were action thrillers that just happened to feature a powerful, smart and occasionally ruthless (when required) pair of gay men. They not only learn to get along, but to build a life together, share a love that ripens from the violent lust of their first encounters into the mature affection and passion of people who have been together for a long time and love and trust each other without reservation. As we journey from book-to-book, we get to know their histories, their families, their dreams (both individual and shared), their friends, their strong moral code and we get to watch them grow and develop as agents, men, and as a committed couple.I’m working really hard not to give away any spoilers in this review, but let’s just say Ty and Zane get to finally express their commitment to one another in a most surprising and moving scene set in the Baltimore Harbor. It’s a gem of writing, and the culmination of more than 8 years of adventure, danger, death and love.It almost goes without saying that Ms. Roux is an extraordinarily talented author. The characters she has created are so vivid and real, they jump off the page at the reader. More than once, I had an almost irresistible desire to duck to avoid a punch or bullet that seemed to come out of my Kindle, right at my face. I survived. So do Ty And Zane.Some long-time characters do not, however, in the final conflict between Ty and Zane, Ty’s former military team (The Sidewinders), the CIA, the NRI, the Cartel and even the Miami police. And some characters whom you will assume to be dead, miraculously end up in a hospital healing, slowly, but healing nonetheless.Aside from Abigail Roux, not many authors could have come up with the colorful Appalachian family that loves their son, Ty, unconditionally, including his grandfather, Chester, who, even at an advanced age, trounces evildoers with the garden shovel he keeps on his person at all times. He’s the crazy old coot who always speaks the truth, regardless of the consequences.Add to that a whole platoon of former Force Recon soldiers who served under Ty in some dangerous, secret operations in unnamed foreign countries, and who still function as a multi-talented, perfectly-trained and -tuned family of soldiers who protect each other at the risk of their own lives. These are men who come running to help, even when they haven’t been asked. They’re so cool, so complex and so powerful, that Ms. Roux has spun them off into their own series, the “Sidewinder” books. Instead, she delivered a brand new, fresh, thriller leavened with a perfect balance of love, friendship and commitment that evokes thrills, fears, anger, disappointment, tears and even occasional laughter. She created a “perfect ending” by making the final book in this series one of its best.Thank you, Ms. Roux for eight years of wonderful reading, brilliant characters and a perfect ending.

Atlanta today is served by a single passenger railroad station known as Peachtree Station located about two miles from downtown. The station in turn is served by a single daily passenger train, Amtrak's Crescent, which has a daily run through the station en route to New Orleans to the South and Washington, D.C. and New York City to the North. Peachtree Station opened in 1918 and thus celebrates its centennial this year. When the station opened, the location was elegant, to complement the lovely architecture, but both station and neighborhood have suffered decline in the intervening years.I know Peachtree Station because I take the Crescent to Atlanta on trips to see my grandchildren. I know the platform, the long stairs leading to the terminal, the benches in the old waiting room, and the cabs awaiting the occasional passenger. With my lifelong love of trains and familiarity with Peachtree Station, I was eager to read this new book, "When Atlanta Took the Train" (2018) which offers a history of Atlanta's passenger rail service and passenger stations from pre-Civil War days to the present. Railroad historian David Steinberg wrote the book in collaboration with the staff of the Southeastern Railway Museum, which has been in operation for over 45 years and is the official transportation history museum of the State of Georgia. Arcadia Publishing, the publisher of many books of American local history, published this new book and kindly sent me a copy to review."When Atlanta Took the Train" beautifully preserves the romance of train travel and the history of Atlanta's passenger trains. The book includes an informative text documenting the passenger trains, railroads, and stations that served Atlanta over the years. The book includes many images of trains, stations, tracks, railroad workers, and passengers. It also shows the changing city of Atlanta with its streets, buildings, industries, and people over the years. It was a delight to read this book, which captures a city and its trains, and includes in one volume a history probably not available elsewhere.The book is arranged in chapters covering the various passenger train stations that operated in Atlanta. Only the Peachtree Station survives. The book first covers the 1853 Union Station. Even before the Civil War, Atlanta was a railroad hub. General Sherman destroyed this station when he captured Atlanta in 1864. This book offers many fascinating images of this long-gone station.After the Civil War, beginning a slow economic recovery, Atlanta became home to another Union Station, the Union Depot of 1871. By the turn of the century, this station had become too small and outmoded, but it continued in service until 1930. Steinberg's book covers the long history of this station and of the trains and companies which used it.A small station called the East Tennessee, Virginia, & Georgia Depot served Atlanta from 1884 to 1895 but no known images of it remain. This book preserves the memory of the station and gives what information remains available about it.The most extensive chapter of this book covers Atlanta's magnificent Terminal Station which opened in 1905 in a structure designed by architect P. Thornton Mayre. Terminal Station took up much of the slack from the out-of-date 1871 station. At its height, it was home to 100 passenger trains a day. The station was closed in 1970 and, alas, demolished in 1972. The history of the station and of the many trains that served it are lovingly preserved in this book.In 1930, Atlanta became home to its third Union Station, located only blocks from Terminal Station, and the old 1871 station was gone at last. This Union Station too was a large, impressive structure home to many trains. It too succumbed to the decline in rail service. It closed in 1970 and was demolished shortly thereafter. Its history is preserved in this book.The final station discussed in the book, and the only passenger station still operating in Atlanta is the Peachtree Station, which had a substantial history before Amtrak took over passenger service and which now services Amtrak's one passenger train through Atlanta. I discussed Peachtree Station at the outset of this review. The book concludes with a short chapter showing old passenger train stations in the Atlanta suburbs, some of which remain standing and some of which have been destroyed, and a brief chapter on excursion trains which sometimes operate in the Atlanta area.I loved learning about and seeing images of the long history of passenger rail service in Atlanta during an era when the passenger train was a critical part of the community. I wanted to get on the train and ride to Peachtree Station and see my family. Readers with a passion for railroading or with an interest in the history of Atlanta will enjoy this book.Robin Friedman

Now I can read the bible without straining my eyes.

Love this Bible! It has big print so you can read it well. I would definitely recommend getting this if you need a large print Bible. I love the fact that it also has Jesus' words in red letters!

Wow! Just what I needed. With my eyes growing older, this Book hits the mark. I've read other Bible versions other than NIV, but I've found myself preferring the NIV. All I needed was a quality Book with "Giant" print. This NIV is spot on, double columns, giant print, Words of Christ in red, a good quality "feel" and I can use a Sharpie Gel highlighter without it "bleeding" through. I made one heavy handed highlight on one sentence to test and it did not show through on the other side of the page. So the pages have adequate thickness for me.So, if you prefer the NIV and your eyes are aging like mine, you should be very happy with the purchase of this Book. I could not be happier with this purchase myself.

I was a little hesitant about getting this after reading some of the negative reviews, but I very glad I took a chance, and bought it anyway. It came today, and I'm very happy with the bible. The print is huge, just what I was looking for. It is very well put together, and I found no problems with the binding or the paper. I'm also happy with the cover material. This is not a bible you will want to bring with you to church. It's very large and quite heavy. Excellent for reading and study at home.

My husband, age 90, has macular degeneration and reads the Bible through every year. He uses a Kindle, and also has a hard copy Bible that he read with a magnifying glass, so we thought we'd try this extra large print Bible. He absolutely loves it! He enjoys being able to turn pages back and forth rather than trying to find different passages on his Kindle. He is more than satisfied with this purchase.

Hallelujah! I knew Zondervan could do it! As the grateful recipient of review copies for many wonderful editions of the Bible published by Zondervan, I've complained with increasing audio about the thinly inked, attractive but almost illegible font the company constantly uses. So I went online and found this edition with a 14-point font that can actually be seen and, therefore, read with one exception. For some unfathomable reason, the "Harmony of Gospels" section in the back matter suddenly reverted to a tiny font (maybe 4-point?) Since a larger font obviously wouldn't align well, I can't help but wonder why those pages were even included in an edition that focuses on readers whose eyes don't focus. Otherwise, this edition makes a nice choice for those of us who want a reader's edition we can actually read.Besides the highly readable font, the "Introductions to the Books of the Bible" section in the back matter makes a nice addition. Also in the back pages, the sparse "Dictionary/Concordance" might have been omitted, but a page for the "Miracles of Jesus' is helpful to have handy as is the "Perspectives From The Bible" with topics and scriptures to look up and read, read, read on important subjects in God's Word.

I ordered this Bible on December 11th and had it in my hands on December 20th. That is excellent considering I live in Bermuda and anything I order is first delivered to an address in NY, USA, and then forwarded to me here. So I was very pleased with the delivery time.As for the Bible itself, I like it. The lettering is at 16.5 point print, which is super giant as advertised.But know also that the Bible itself is LARGE and will not fit into an average Bible case/cover bag.There are only two things that kept me from giving this Bible five stars.1.) The pages are extremely thin and a lot of them are stuck together at the edges, so that I have to tear them apart to separate them. So far this hasn't damaged any of the pages but the chance of that happening is there.2.) I'm not a fan of the two-tone colored cover ... and the cover feels like it is made of rubber. Thankfully, I bought this Bible for the contents on the inside and not for its cover, but still .... it just doesn't "feel" like a Bible to me.However, the pages are why I took away a star and not the cover because the description clearly stated this was not a leather or an imitation leather cover.I would still recommend this Bible though. In my opinion, it is worth its price and a nice 'house' Bible to keep laying around.

Poor quality. PRINT size is great but the pages are not even and a few stick out at the end. Could not contact seller could only return. This was a gift for an elderly person and this did not make a nice gift due to the poor binding quality.

Just announced on March 2, 2015 as the 2015 Winner/ Art of Eating award. Congratulationa are due to Chef Sterling for his exhaustive research and in depth dive into the Mayan culture of the Yucatan peninsula. The book is arranged by areas of the peninsula with a comprehensive introduction, pantry and sections on ingredients and ways to find them in the index. I bought the book last summer while in the planning of my Yucatan food-centric trip that was just completed yesterday. You will dive into the culture customs and rich history of the Mayan people with great pictures throughout. We had the pleasure of meeting and cooking with Chef Sterling on our recent trip that included a visit to the large Merida outdoor market to buy items for our class. I have not cooked from the book yet and look forward to doing so now that I have returned from my trip. His book is essential to anyone wishing to learn more about the Yucatan in general but the food focus also shines. His recipes are explained in depth in the book with substitutions and recipes for recados (spice pastes) that are ubiquitous to the region. I cannot think of the Yucatan cuisine as a Mexican cuisine because it has completely different spice profiles and cooking methods (pibil or underground oven). I went to the Yucatan in search of longaniza (a specialty sausage found near Valladoilid) and smoked pork (go to Temazon). We also traveled in search of light and airy meringues in the tiny village of Tziz too.You will want to take your time reading this book. Once you read it you will want to plan a trip to Yucatan to experience what he knows so intimately. His passion for the culture shines throughout the book.Now for a smattering of the recipes contained here you must try: Pol'kanes (p. 111) [Read through all recipes and be sure to make recommended accompaniments for each of the recipes.] You will make Toksel first for the filling (divine! Do not let lima beans put you off from making this). The polkane is a football or elongated shaped disks that resemble snake eggs. The filling (toksel) is made by toasting pumpkin (pepita) seeds in a cast iron skillet till browned and fragrant (heavenly), then combined with cooked baby limas, green onions, chives, habanero, sea salt and cilantro. A ball of masa will be molded by hand so a tablespoon of filling can be molded into the center then closed so they can be fried. Your salsas will be a batch of X'nipek (*X is pronounced as "sh"). and a fiery (need just a touch but a must have) Chile tamulado (made with habaneros). Oh, pol'kanes in Mayan for "snake head". There is some heat to the pol'kanes but it is the sum of its parts that balance out the heat components. Trust me, you will see and crave more.I can go on and on but I can only hope that this review has peaked your interest in buying this book.Congrats to Chef David for bringing the Yucatan culture and cuisine into the mainstream.

My husband is from the Yucatan and I have been looking for recipes to capture the essence of his home. This book hits the mark! These are such magical recipes-- they represent the region so beautifully and bring its flavors and scents into our home. I love the guide and photos of the fruits and veggies of the region. They themselves are works of art. Now, I must admit that some of these recipes take TIME and are COMPLEX. But they are sooo worth it. The section La Concina Economica, which highlights the food made by the mamas, contains recipes that are a bit easier and are what my husband's family ate 90% of the time. The Horchata recipe is also outstanding. 5 stars! I absolutley recommend this book!

When Sterling left Manhattan to settle in a beautiful colonial house in Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula, he fell in love with the culture, the people and the food. Now he is a celebrated chef and the founder of the first culinary institute devoted to Yucatan cooking, a cuisine built on a Mayan foundation but incorporating a variety of influences from Cuba to France. With its intriguing text and gorgeous photography, it is easy to see why this delicious volume (part autobiography, part travel guide, part history lesson, and part cookery book) received the Best International Cookbook Award and was named Cookbook of the Year by the James Beard Foundation.

I am absolutely blown away by how amazing this book is. History, biology, food, geography, photography. I couldn't even begin to absorb it all in one sitting. I love the Yucatan. I've been there numerous times, eaten well, and am very interested in the culture of the Maya. That said, I clearly only scratched the surface in three trips. This book clearly demonstrates the beauty of what can happen when one spends 10 years researching and fine-tuning something that is clearly the core of one's heart. I would love to meet David Sterling one day, and shake his hand for creating a "cook book" that is worthy of passing down to my 12-year-old son as a family heirloom. This book is simply fantastic.

My husband and I just got back from Merida where we went to Chef David cooking class Los Dos. The class was awesome! If you can I highly recommend taking his class you won't regret it. You learn the culture, history and food of Yucatan. We made several dishes from the "cookbook". Yucatan is more than a cookbook. I ordered by book once I got home and received the book 4 days later and I took it into my work. I have 4 people who said that they are going to order the book as well. Chef David signed a card for me to put in my book. I was going to buy it from him directly but he talked me out of it because the book weights 6 pounds and that would have put me over the limit for my suitcase. Chef David is very funny and honest man. We were only in Merida for 4 days so we missed Chef David class on chocolate. You will enjoy this book it is worth the $60 price but you will pay less than that on Amazon.

I bought this beautiful book as a gift for my daughter but I simply had to read it from cover to cover before gifting it. I have followed all the Mexican chefs on TV for years, Rick Bayles, Diana Kennedy, Susanna Trillling, etc. but when I saw David on Rick Bayles' show, I could see the depth of his love and knowledge for the food of a state in Mexico that lures me back over and over. I truly feel that these recipes are stiff competition for the classical French cooking compendiums.
