I loved the continuation of the Jamie and Laura saga, almost as much as I did the first book (Love... From Both Sides). In this segment, Jamie and Laura are married and suddenly find themselves to be expectant parents, as well. While the humor and writing remain solid, and the dialogue still flows well, there are a couple of predictable parts. It should be said that not only did this not detract from my enjoyment of the book at all, and at the end I couldn't wait to purchase the newest book in the series, but also that the story matured pretty well along with its characters. Maybe Jamie still makes a few dopey mistakes, and maybe Laura is a bit harsh (and occasionally makes her own dopey mistakes), but I love the way the relationship, marriage and pregnancy all progress. I also appreciated the new character introductions, brief though they might have been, because they added to the story in a true-to-life fashion, and added to the fun of the book. Personally, I felt that the author did a good job keeping the journal and blog entries true to the characters who wrote them.I think that this author has a real talent and look forward to reading more work by him.(There are still adult situations and adult language, so buyer beware if you don't appreciate that type of story.)

Humor in the British style. Certainly not PC in these current times. Uses British colloquialisms and names of British stores. Unless you were raised in the UK or read English novels you may miss some of the nuances. That said, the book made me laugh out loud several times which seldom happens these days. Could have done without the epilogue. I will definitely read it again. Highly recommended.

Love From Both Sides was very graphic and a little tasteless, but oh so funny. I approached Love and Sleepless Nights with trepidation. This book is a continuation of the main characters in Both Sides, but it is not nearly as raunchy. There is still some graphic sex albeit with humor. This book seems to have more of a plot and not just humorous incidents.Spoiler: the infant illness was especially touching and I felt very true to life. The series seems to be maturing along with the characters.

I LOVED this book. I am not a quiet chuckler, but this had me flat-out guffawing unexpectedly at some of the zingers that were put forward. Absolutely delightful! I started out with Love...From both sides by Nick Spalding, and enjoyed it so much, that I went straight to Love...and Sleepless Nights. My sister recommended these books, and told me to get them both, "because you will absolutely want to read the second one..." She was right! I was at the cottage, and ploughed through them both with people looking at me whenever I barked out another incredulous spurt of laughter. Be prepared for alot of fun!

2ND BOOK, JUST AS GOOD AS THE FIRST. SO FRIGGIN' FUNNY!!!!!!! I LITERALLY LAUGHED OUT LOUD AND BOUGHT THE WHOLE SERIES. I hope this author continues this series for 20 more books!!! Nick Spalding should be a comedian!!!

As always a riot. His descriptions are hilarious. I can actually visualize the situations he gets himself into. Not a true Spalding book unless there is at least one good fart story. Yes I'm an infant that can't help but laugh. As always I will and have highly recommended. Gbash

This is the second book in the series, and also the second best. It's still very often hilarious- especially their midwife, Jamie's impression of Laura's pregnancy, and their hospital stay. Unfortunately, the second half of the book chronicles the first year of their daughter's life, which is fraught with marital problems for the once happy couple. I'm sure this is the norm for relationships that are under the stress of parenting, but I don't want to know that! I want them to still be happy! Therefore, this book gets 4 stars- still funny, but too much sad for 5 stars.

Well, this is the perfect sequel. Not since reading Barring some unforeseen accident by Jackson Tippet Mccray did I laugh so much reading. Believe me, I have read a lot of book who are suppose to be funny, such as some written by stand up comics. They just don't tranlated well on paper.Love..and sleepless night is perfect. I believe I enjoyed this book so much because I am a parent by mostly is that even if I am in my fourties, I still love a good fart joke and boy was I even pleased with this one. I only wish it wasn't that last of the serie.

Directorate S: The C.I.A. and America's Secret Wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan, by Steve Coll

Review

“Coll’s book is riveting”—Richard Cohen, NY Daily News "[A]journalistic masterpiece...Coll succeeds on all levels...Coll is masterful at plumbing the depths of agencies and sects within both Afghanistan and Pakistan...In this era of fake news, Coll remains above it all, this time delivering an impeccably researched history of "diplomacy at the highest levels of government in Washington, Islamabad, and Kabul."—Kirkus Reviews (starred)“With his evenhanded approach, gift for limning character, and dazzling reporting skills, he has created an essential work of contemporary history.”—Booklist (starred)“The most comprehensive work to date on the U.S. war in Afghanistan…Coll’s vital work provides a factual and analytical foundation for all future work on the Afghan War and U.S. policy in Central Asia.”— Publisher’s Weekly (starred)“Spellbinding. . . It does for America in Afghanistan what Michael Gordon and Tom Ricks did for the Iraq misadventure in Cobra II and Fiasco.”—Evening Standard“This sequel to Ghost Wars might well become the definitive account of the CIA and America’s secret wars in Afghanistan and Pakistan . . . In the pages of Directorate S, the sequel to Coll’s Pulitzer prize-winning Ghost Wars, the story is delivered with a literary prowess that has been absent in previous western accounts of America’s longest running war. The dance of blame, with the US swaying at one moment towards Pakistan and the next towards Afghanistan, is a choreography familiar to CIA chiefs, US presidents and writers who have tackled the subject. Coll refuses to follow this tired tune, and the result is masterful.”—The Guardian  “Steve Coll’s Directorate S is the sequel to his magisterial Ghost Wars. Both books rest on a foundation of serious scholarship and Coll’s extraordinary access, to individual CIA officers mostly, but also to many others. These notably included members of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agency, where Directorate S was the name given to the branch of the agency “devoted to secret operations in support of the Taliban, Kashmiri guerrillas, and other violent Islamic radicals”. Every assertion is carefully sourced and checked. This book is in the finest traditions of American investigative journalism. Coll is the thinking man’s Michael Wolff.” — Sherard Cowper- Coles, Times of London “Coll draws on decades of experience in South Asia, nearly 600 interviews over a decade, and thousands of pages of documents to give the most balanced and comprehensive picture to date of the unraveling of U.S. policy in Afghanistan. Few writers can match Coll’s length of time on the topic, range of contacts, or personal knowledge of realities on the ground… it is hard to imagine a more complete and thoughtful account of how the United States went wrong in Afghanistan.”—Task & Purpose“A spectacular account of 15 years of secret CIA and US military operations in Afghanistan and Pakistan by the investigative journalist and academic Steve Coll . . .With impressive access to American, Afghan and Pakistani intelligence, Coll reveals the extent of the surveillance undertaken by all sides . . . Directorate S has a cast of characters that make Bourne movies pale in comparison — from type-A CIA officers and paramilitaries to cigar-smoking and whisky-drinking Pakistani generals to a dog nicknamed “Lucky” because he was able to detect incoming missile strikes from drones before they hit.”—The Financial Times

According to General Sir Frank Kitson, "Insurgents start with nothing but a cause and grow to strength, while the counter-insurgents start with everything but a cause and gradually decline in strength and grow to weakness" ("Low Intensity Operations: Subversion, Insurgency and Peacekeeping"). That 1971-era aphorism has repeatedly been proven correct and the US "Coalition" effort in Afghanistan demonstrates its accuracy yet again. After nearly two decades and around 1 trillion dollars spent so far, a bloody and very tenuous equilibrium exists between Taliban insurgents and supporters of the Afghan government. The war from its inception to the present time is comprehensively researched and compellingly presented in Steve Coll's two books, "Ghost Wars" and "Directorate S". Unfortunately, with no end to the conflict in sight, a third volume may eventually be needed to update the story.Despite the narrow focus implied by the title, "Directorate S" does not focus either exclusively nor primarily on that branch of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI). The CIA was the focus of "Ghost Wars". The much more obscure Pakistani analogue, ISI Directorate S (charged - at least in part - with providing guidance, logistic, intelligence, material and occasionally directed support for Islamist insurgent/terrorist groups operating against Indian influence and Coalition forces in Afghanistan) has a background – but baleful - position in "Directorate S".Coll's history begins where "Ghost Wars" left off, i.e., the conclusion of the 1979-1989 battle of Afghani and allied Islamist groups against the Soviet Union. The USSR was defeated by CIA and Saudi supported insurgents. This occurred despite “all out” efforts by a modern and generally ruthless military directed against a “ragtag” constellation of tribes lacking an air force, armored vehicles and other accouterments possessed by the Red Army. The Soviet defeat ought to have been an object lesson for successors, but it wasn’t.Of course, the inevitability of dramatic and overwhelming US action against al Qaeda and its Taliban hosts after September 11 was obvious and perhaps justifiable at the time. What wasn’t thought out though was the consequence of military action, that being a long-term and interminable involvement in a conflict that would result in (at the very best) a costly and unsustainable stalemate. Pham Van Dong, (North Vietnamese premier and Ho Chi Minh’s close aide and successor) presciently commented to French war historian Bernard Fall in 1962, “Americans do not like long, inconclusive wars—and this is going to be a long, inconclusive war" and that was 3 years before we ramped up involvement. If, as Henry Kissinger remarked, "The test of policy is how it ends, not how it begins" (Washington Post, March, 2014), we've failed utterly and completely in Afghanistan. As even a casual reading of counterinsurgency literature shows, the prospect of prevailing against an insurgency in territory adjoining a supportive state approximates zero. A quick glance at a map shows such a state (Pakistan) and a cursory glance at any news source reported since about 1947 gives insight into the ineradicable antagonism (religious, geostrategic) between Muslim Pakistan and Hindu India. Afghanistan isn't known as "The Graveyard of Empires" for nothing. The debacles outsiders suffered there are well known and the stuff of legends and fiction. Consider George MacDonald Fraser's anti-hero Harry Paget Flashman's adventures in the First Anglo-Afghan War. While our military leadership isn't as inept as that of Major-General William George Keith Elphinstone (whose disastrous retreat from Kabul harkens to Napoleon’s retreat from Moscow) and we've yet to suffer other ignominies of First Anglo-Afghan War such as the Last Stand at the Battle of Gandamak and the Siege of Jalalabad, we aren't winning, either.“Directorate S” details all the problems associated with porous borders, semi-autonomous (i.e., largely ungoverned) tribal regions, endemic corruption of historical proportions (the Karzai government), warlords, weak central government lacking legitimacy (parallels between Karzai and Diem in Vietnam come to mind?), opium, factionalism (in the US, Pakistan, Afghanistan), conflicting priorities (the Petraeus school v the Abizaid approach), lack of a coordinated strategy (CIA v. DEA v. JSOC, etc., etc), heavy-handed tactics (drone strikes killing civilians), the always inimical influence of religion (especially militant Islam) and competing/conflicting interests of India, Pakistan, Iran. A particularly ill-advised decision was made with the US invasion of Iraq. The real irony of our involvement in Afghanistan is this: “Pakistan is 50 times more important than Afghanistan for the United States”, a candid remark made directly to President Hamid Karzi in the Arg Palace by Vice President Joe Biden. Karzai had repeatedly warned of ISI/Directorate S involvement in his country and the Americans were already well aware of it. We knew that ISI was directly and indirectly responsible for the deaths of many Americans and the Taliban likely wouldn’t be effective absent Pakistan’s support. In short, we knew we were facing rats in Pakistan’s ISI: “Pakrats” and there was precious little we could do about it.Sooner or later, the “endless money that forms the sinews of war” (per Cicero) from the US and Coalition forces will end. The casualties will exhaust us. We will leave. Whether India will allow Pakistani suzerainty in Afghanistan is anybody’s guess. As Steve Coll so well demonstrates, a major contributor to whatever happens next is Directorate S, “Pakrats” indeed and in fact.

This is a serious scholarly study of two national complexities supported with 37 pages of footnotes in tiny print.Overall, it's not an easy read. But conversely it's virtually pointless to try to understand regional conflicts without a close read. Studying Directorate S will not make one an overnight expert, but it will teach one to avoid others who claim to be without years of specialized training and on-site experience. Perhaps the strongest message is that no outsider can appreciate the complexities of ancient and modern tribal, ethnic, cultural, and religious rivalries, beyond a few with high security clearances and impeccable integrity.Coll doesn't do much undocumented editorializing, except for his contempt for how we stumbled into a war we could not win nor a peace we couldn't impose."No small part of N.A.T.O.'s failure to stabilize Afghanistan flowed from the disasterous decision by George W. Bush to invade Iraq in 2003. The war inflamed and mobilized deeper resistance to American counterterrorism policy and warfare in the Muslim world." (pg 664)Those seeking context--who have seen the elephant or seek more understanding of this old expression--should turn first to Chapter 26, Lives and Limbs. The book may be mostly political, but there's a human side too, described indelibly on a human scale. Best I've ever read.

Steven Coll, dean of the Columbia School of Journalism vividly describes our involvement on Afghanistan from 2000 until the beginning of the Trump Presidency. The beauty of Coll’s work is his clear analysis of the various factions of the CIA, the Military and the State Department, showing how their interpretations of events in Afghanistan affected the course of the war. The journalist demonstrates his in-depth knowledge of the ethnic divisions in the country and how they play out with class and economic disparity. He introduces the Taliban players in the Afghan War chronologically, builds up suspense as he describes what US decision makers favored a military rout out and who wanted a peaceful negotiation with tribal Islamists. We learn who the characters are who represent the north or south of Afghanistan, who trusts Pakistan and who view the Pakistani Secret Service as the source of Al Qaeda operatives who filter down into Kandahar to plant IED’s. The known events like 9/11, Holbrook’s sudden death, or the perceived success of General Petraeus’ successful ‘Surge’ act as pillars of pivotal changes. Finally Coll summarizes the the 16 years of war and hypothesizing on why we are still fighting this war, sixteen years later.

This book by Berkeley physicist Richard Muller is a combination of very interesting and disappointing. The main goal of the book is to provide an overview of a new theory of the generation of time that Muller has proposed. According to Muller, just like space expands as the universe expands, so does time. Thus, when the Big Bang occurred, along with new space new time was also created, and new time continues to be created even as the expansion of the universe is accelerating. This is a very interesting and in fact fascinating hypothesis. Muller even provides some preliminary, testable experimental hypotheses of the hypothesis: always a mark of a good scientist. Unfortunately this theory constitutes only about 30% of the book. The rest of the book is devoted to building up to the theory and then indulging rather superficially in philosophical concepts that don't really seem to have much of a connection to the main thesis. The first part of the book which explains relativity, thermodynamics and quantum theory is on a sound footing. What I like about Muller is that he is not afraid to be opinionated and to point out common misunderstandings that both students and experts have (for example, he dispels the common misunderstanding that in relativity, different observers "disagree" on the properties of different events). The part on thermodynamics is actually quite illuminating, especially when Muller comes down hard on Arthur Eddington's thesis that entropy drives the arrow of time from the past to the future. Muller tells us that the connection between entropy and time both increasing has been presented to us by biased events like eggs and teacups breaking. But as he says, teacups can also be built up, and even this event - which involves a decrease and not increase in entropy - is correlated with an increase in time. Thus, Eddington's correlation between entropy increase and time is just that, a correlation that does not have experimental support and does not make testable predictions. Eddington seems to have misled several generations of science writers, students and physicists. I had not quite appreciated this fact.So far so good, but the last third of the book then sort of unravels as Muller flits from one philosophical topic to another. Many of these seem dimly connected to the book's main proposal, and I also found some of the sentence constructions rather clumsy. These include free will, souls and empathy, and Muller mostly recycles stuff that other people have said (the one interesting thing that he says is that faster-than-light travel would violate free will because effects could then precede causes); his treatment of these topics is rather superficial in my opinion and the style is quite rambling. He comes back to what he calls the '4D Big Bang' suddenly at the end of the book.Overall I think this book is valuable and at times even highly provocative for its presentation of the uncertain connection between entropy and the 'arrow of time' and for its novel idea of the creation of new time. Those chapters are very much worth reading. But the rest of the book is more like a haphazard stream of consciousness exploring topics whose connection to the physics is not really clear. Muller is a truly outstanding scientist who has massively contributed to physics and physics education (several of his students have won Nobel Prizes) over three decades, a restless intellect and a fine teacher, but this book may not showcase the best of all these qualities.

The promos for this book make it sound as if it's for the general reading public. Well, it's not. There are equations and references to equations throughout. Muller skips over many difficult ideas without sufficient explanation, and these really need to be explained more thoroughly to a novice reader in the field of physics. Also there are many digressions (do we really need to know how he decided to name his daughter?). In other places, where he needs to build his arguments carefully, he doesn't do it.Here’s a passage from the middle of the book to demonstrate what I mean: “The vacuum contains energy. It can be polarized; that is, it responds to an electric field by separating its “virtual” charges. That polarization can be detected and measured by looking at the energy levels in the hydrogen atom (through something called the Lamb shift) and can be detected directly by the force the vacuum can exert on metal plates (the Casmir effect).” But Muller doesn’t explain the Lamb shift and he doesn’t explain the Casimir effect. I do know what some of these terms mean from reading other books, but I was lost in the woods anyway. If you understand the above passage, then this is an appropriate book for you. If not, look elsewhere.I did think Muller made some interesting points in the second half of the book, and I like that he’s willing to question the common wisdom in physics, e.g. the dogma of physicalism and the madcap rush of others to embrace string theory and MWI.I thought the digression on souls and empathy was inappropriate for a book like this. But Muller is certainly the go-to guy for science fiction movies and series! He must have seen every one.I'd recommend THE GOLDILOCKS ENIGMA (Paul Davies) or THE ELEGANT UNIVERSE by Brian Greene which are better introductions to some of these mind blowing concepts.

I loved "In the Garden of Beasts" and really liked "Devil in the White City" and "Isaac's Storm," but this one a dud. Or, to be more specific, half a dud. Larson links two stories - Marconi's marketing of his wireless technology and a murder that apparently grabbed the headlines worldwide in the early 20th century - but the only thing they have in common is one incident. The rest of the book tells two totally different stories, and while both convey a sense of the times, they are not otherwise related and really don't complement each other. The story of Dr. Crippen's murder of his wife Belle (among other names) is more standard Larson - it's fascinating at all times and gripping at others. Marconi's story is also interesting, but not as much, and by constantly jumping from one to the other he undercuts the drama of both. The last 100 pages or so, when the two stories converge, is the best part of the book and more or less worth waiting for, but getting there is not half the fun and is downright tedious at times.I'd pass on this one. If you haven't read "In the Garden of Beasts," do so now, and then think about his other books. But don't waste your money or time on this one.

What a fantastic book! I've been struck down by the flu and had to spend several days in bed. This book was my companion. As miserable as I feel, this book made me forget about my symptoms. I was enthralled by the story and had to constantly remind myself this was non-fiction. A lot of the negative reviews this book has received claim that Mr.Larsen went into too much detail about Marconi and his experiments. I beg to differ. I have no knowledge of the intricacies of electricity or how waves travel but found the information easy to understand and relevant to the story. I also think the book was well organized. The transfer between the stories of Marconi and Crippen are done well. I was interested in both stories, not just the gruesome details of the murder, which does not present itself until late in the book. This is a book that is both engaging and informative. Highly recommended.

This is the third book of Erik Larson that I have read. All of his books, including this one, are highly researched and easy to read. If you can only choose one of his books to read, I would say by far, his book "Devil in the White City" is his best.Thunderstruck, uses the same format as the "Devil in the White City", where he interweaves two stories together. One story is about Marconi, who invented the wireless. The other story is about Dr. Crippen, who murdered his wife. The two stories are connected because Marconi's wireless is used to capture Dr. Crippen as he tried to escape to America.First let me talk about the Marconi part of the book. As stated above, Erik Larson does an amazing job researching this book. He has a "Notes and Sources" section at the end of the book, where he shows his sources. For the first half of the book, I was riveted to the Marconi story. Mr. Larson does a great job explaining how Marconi created the wireless, how he tried to improve on the wireless, and how other people also claimed credit for creating the wireless before Marconi. This story at times drags though in the second half of the book. Mr Larson tries to write about all of his research, an at times it felt that what he was saying was not advancing the story. It felt repetitive at times, even though the event happened at three different locations.Just an FYI, Mr. Larson sometimes goes on historical tangents. Usually I found these tangents extremely entertaining and informative. But I can see some readers finding them unnecessary for the story. But please note, I am extremely happy he put them into the book. The other part of the book is about Dr. Crippen. For the first half of the book I found this part of the story somewhat boring. Once Dr. Crippen meets Ethel, the story become really interesting. If you are looking to read about a sick and devious murderer, this is not the book for you. Dr. Crippen and Ethel seem like really nice people, while his wife is not that likeable. One thing the reader needs to take account is this murder actually happen, and it occurred in the early 1900's. No matter how well Mr. Larson investigated this story, he couldn't find all of the answers. He can't go into the mind of Dr. Crippen, he can only state the facts as he know them. Thus some aspects of the murder, Mr. Larson can't explain. He will give different theories, but he can't say for sure how the murder went down. Also, some actions of Dr. Crippen really confused me as a reader. Here is an example of the one that bothers me the most. His wife always was threatening to leave him, and telling him that other men would wan't her in a minute. She even takes steps in terms of leaving him. Why did Dr. Crippen not just leave his wife. instead of murdering her? Mr. Larson as an historical writer can't answer that question, but it is a question that really bothers me.The reason I gave this book 4 stars is that the story about Dr. Crippen is boring for the 1st half of the book. And sometimes the author goes overboard about Marconi. A good editor should have seen this problem and fixed it. Thus I recommend this book, with those small caveats.

Entertaining beyond all reason, Erik Larson tells parallel tales of obsession, genius, myopia, accomplishment (and its sacrifices). The book serves as the definitive, astonishingly compelling, detailed and surprising life of Guglielmo Marconi, ultimately (at last?) credited as the inventor of wireless communication, an invention that would profoundly change the world. His inspiration, desperation, obsession, his perhaps unprecedented self-belief, as well as his deep-seeded terror of competitors, drove him relentlessly on. Not a scientist. Self-educated. He, and his "wireless" was quite beyond his life's work. It was his life. Of equal appeal is the unraveling of one of the most compelling murders in British history, of which I will say little. Just make SURE you read through the last page! This is indeed an historical account - an almost maniacally researched one - that reads like a novel, a thriller, a procedural. It is exceedingly entertaining. As well as a profound achievement of his own. Larson' prose is crystal clear, filled with amusement, and amusing details, and he creates characters of many dimensions, impulses, quirks, and oddities. A great read.

Erik Larsen is an admirable researcher and tension builder as he was in the boffo 'Devil in the White City'. I loved learning about Marconi, a fascinatingly complex individual and the amazing Dr. Crippen. The tale bogged down in the middle but it sure caught fire when Belle disappeared. Another amazing chapter in history masterfully told.Note on Larson's research: He doesn't just provide a fact, he shows his relentless research in things like the cat used in the forensics study of Belle. He not only knew the cat's name but that it survived and was adopted by a medical assistant, had a littler of kittens and was done in by a dog. He doesn't do research by halves.

I've been using this book since I was a bride 47 years ago. My original copy finally wore out. So I ordered a new one. The recipes are great tasting, well written and easy to follow. The book is divided by holidays and provides a variety of recipes made in Jewish kitchens throughout the world. In the preface of each chapter, informative text provides insight into the way traditional foods were cooked in different areas of the world.I still make my grandmother's matzo ball soup, her gefilte fish and her chopped liver. But everything else I serve comes from the favorite recipes I discovered in Joan Nathan's lovely book.

For those readers who have lost their Mother's or Bubba's recipes The Joan Nathen Holiday Kitchen is a Godsend. Mrs. Nathen writes more than recipes. She gives us history and why the items work for the holiday. When you are at your wits end trying to put together a holiday meal this is the cookbook you will reach for over and over again.I liked the book so much I sent copies to all my kids so they would not be caught without the tools to put out a great Passover meal. There are several recipes just for haroset. The recipe for Homentashen is easy as is the one for rugala. You will find recipes for fish when you don't want meat. I love this book!

I am giving this book as a gift to a non-Jewish friend. My copy was also given to me as a gift. It should be shared just this way. Love the many different options, including Eastern European, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern dishes. Between my mother in law and myself, we have made a majority of these dishes over the course of the High Holidays, and lesser Holidays. Never a disappointment!

One of the best cookbooks you could ever purchase, hands down. Detail oriented structure and more.

Great book but jacket is missing. Was never mentioned in description

Great Book...Fast transaction!

Great stories accompany the recipes! The stuffed cabbage tastes just like my grandmother's!

Lots of favorites from my childhood.Easy to follow recipes.Lots of choices for everyone - meat eaters and vegetarians.
